I suppose the trendy aspect and the aggressiveness of some of the enthusiasts also plays a role. "Drone = Drone Operator = Asshole = Fair Game."
This. I was flying a ~280 class brushed quadrotor (JJRC Tarantula X6) at an empty baseball field locally, just doing some funnels and nose-in exercises for practice and I had several people stopping to watch. Most thought it was cool. I had one guy ask me if it had a camera and he was surprised it didn't; I told him it was a sport flying toy quad (while it has the power to let you carry an action camera, you'll wear out the motors very quickly with the weight).100% of the time, people always stop and say whoa cool!
- Because idiots fly them way to high almost hitting passenger airplanes thus effecting all us of folks who fly Radio Controlled aircraft.
- A lot of drone pilots do other stupid stuff with their drones affecting everyone who flies RC.
- A lot of Drone pilots have no insurance or guidelines to fly by and are very reckless, see 1 and 2.
- A lot are loud and annoying.
- And finally I can no longer fly my larger sailplanes at my RC field because of the new 600' height regulations imposed on us because of those fucking drones. Fuck Them!
I do think drone racing is cool tho...
That's too bad but not surprising. Can't have nice things because people have to be stupid with tech.
The same is true with IDIOTS pointing handheld lasers at planes...
I suppose the trendy aspect and the aggressiveness of some of the enthusiasts also plays a role. "Drone = Drone Operator = Asshole = Fair Game."
I have talked to some people that are under the mistaken impression that the Air above their residence is private property and the drone by flying over is trespassing. When I point out the obvious flaw in this argument they get really defensive.
The Causby Court put forth two key principles regarding airspace below the MSA. First, landowners have “exclusive control of the immediate reaches of the enveloping atmosphere.” Second, landowners own at least as much of the space above the ground as they can occupy or use in connection with the land.
I really don't mind the guy flying it around the local park or in their backyard, but I don't want them in the wilderness ...
Some anti-drone folks feel exactly the opposite. They'd prefer you use it far away from people (wilderness).
Nothing wrong with using it in wilderness if it's done responsibly and far enough from animals, don't use it to harass them etc. And if you lose it, you better go find it and not just leave it there.
Yours is a fine example of a place where nobody could have an expectation of privacy, or peace and quiet.Shrug, I see a lot of people hating on them on the internet but whenever I fly mine people are always coming up to me asking me about it and wanting to see the footage. I flew it near a huge crowd waiting for a Mardi Gras parade and not one person had an ill thing to say about it, I actually had a few chicks hitting on me because of it.
I just remembered that story about some kid flying his drone at a beach and some lady thinking he was perving them then proceeded to beat the kid. IIRC, the lady got charged with assault.
Technically what a we in the States call wilderness is what is set up as "Wilderness areas" by the Government these are vast swaths of land inside National Parks and National Forest where no mechanical transportation can be used. And no roads or anything can be built. They are suppose to be protected in their pristine sate so future generations can enjoy them. So you cant fly you drone in our Wilderness areas. Not sure if Canada has something similar, Sorry for the off topic.
And back on topic I forgot to mention we lost another of our fields we flew at, it was a state park. All because some @##! drone flyer buzzed a bunch of picnickers and they didn't like it and complained to the Superintendent and wam all RC off the field.
So I have no love for drones. Although I do own a micro one I use to play with our cat.
It's a PITA when you're trying to relax at a beach or take in the landscape in a natural hotspot or trying to concentrate in my home and some jerk keeps making this disturbing noise with his drone for tens of minutes. They do make some noise.
Ask John Connor.
