I suppose the trendy aspect and the aggressiveness of some of the enthusiasts also plays a role. "Drone = Drone Operator = Asshole = Fair Game."

  • Because idiots fly them way to high almost hitting passenger airplanes thus effecting all us of folks who fly Radio Controlled aircraft.

  • A lot of drone pilots do other stupid stuff with their drones affecting everyone who flies RC.
  • A lot of Drone pilots have no insurance or guidelines to fly by and are very reckless, see 1 and 2.

  • A lot are loud and annoying.

  • And finally I can no longer fly my larger sailplanes at my RC field because of the new 600' height regulations imposed on us because of those fucking drones. Fuck Them!

I do think drone racing is cool tho...

100% of the time, people always stop and say whoa cool!
This. I was flying a ~280 class brushed quadrotor (JJRC Tarantula X6) at an empty baseball field locally, just doing some funnels and nose-in exercises for practice and I had several people stopping to watch. Most thought it was cool. I had one guy ask me if it had a camera and he was surprised it didn't; I told him it was a sport flying toy quad (while it has the power to let you carry an action camera, you'll wear out the motors very quickly with the weight).

I just remembered that story about some kid flying his drone at a beach and some lady thinking he was perving them then proceeded to beat the kid. IIRC, the lady got charged with assault.

That's too bad but not surprising. Can't have nice things because people have to be stupid with tech.
The same is true with IDIOTS pointing handheld lasers at planes...

Because DRONE WARS!

(They made the footage with racing drones and then overlayed 3D printed Xwings and Ties in post)

I have talked to some people that are under the mistaken impression that the Air above their residence is private property and the drone by flying over is trespassing. When I point out the obvious flaw in this argument they get really defensive.

Because it's cool to temporarily, and potentially permanently, blind people. Maybe they'll even crash the aircraft and kill a couple hundred people, but the lulz were had...

I remember hanging out near the RC club even back in the 70s and they were cool, but didn't have cameras att of course.

Some of those things were pretty large.

Were kinda pre Predator drone sized, and were gas powered.

The problem with the newer versions are where they are flown at sometimes these days I suppose.

This is my biggest issue with them. They are bought by idiots, that can't be bothered to learn the rules or follow basic common sense or decency. Soon they will be like cell phones at concerts, blocking everyone elses view. Except they will be flying over forest fires, etc, causing real issues. Not to mention they are loud as hell.

I was deep in the wilderness of a national park last week, and of course there was some asshole flying his drone all over the place, total disregard to the fact it is illegal. The sound traveled for at least a mile. Then they mess with animals with them and disrupt the vistas.

I really don't mind the guy flying it around the local park or in their backyard, but I don't want them in the wilderness and I don't want to go to the beach and have 100 drones flying around ruining the atmosphere.

The FAA controls the navigable airspace. But until drones came out, 10 feet above my house wasn't considered navigable. Considering the rules for standard aircraft are 1,000 feet AGL in populated areas, unless taking off or landing, not 10 feet over the fence. I could see states successfully challenging the FAA's jurisdiction low to the ground. The fact is, right now the law is a little gray, but there is a Supreme Court ruling that says you do own some of the air above your property.

The Causby Court put forth two key principles regarding airspace below the MSA. First, landowners have “exclusive control of the immediate reaches of the enveloping atmosphere.” Second, landowners own at least as much of the space above the ground as they can occupy or use in connection with the land.

People being annoying A-holes will eventually ruin it for everyone.

Some anti-drone folks feel exactly the opposite. They'd prefer you use it far away from people (wilderness).

Those are people that never go to the wilderness nor understand the legal status it carries.

It's like anything else that makes noise, just don't be an ass about it. Flying a drone around your yard or a park, no problem. Hovering thirty feet over my yard? You're being an ass. Buzzing the neighborhood at 10:30pm or 5:30am? You're being an ass.

Nothing wrong with using it in wilderness if it's done responsibly and far enough from animals, don't use it to harass them etc. And if you lose it, you better go find it and not just leave it there.

Technically what a we in the States call wilderness is what is set up as "Wilderness areas" by the Government these are vast swaths of land inside National Parks and National Forest where no mechanical transportation can be used. And no roads or anything can be built. They are suppose to be protected in their pristine sate so future generations can enjoy them. So you cant fly you drone in our Wilderness areas. Not sure if Canada has something similar, Sorry for the off topic.

And back on topic I forgot to mention we lost another of our fields we flew at, it was a state park. All because some @##! drone flyer buzzed a bunch of picnickers and they didn't like it and complained to the Superintendent and wam all RC off the field.

So I have no love for drones. Although I do own a micro one I use to play with our cat.

Shrug, I see a lot of people hating on them on the internet but whenever I fly mine people are always coming up to me asking me about it and wanting to see the footage. I flew it near a huge crowd waiting for a Mardi Gras parade and not one person had an ill thing to say about it, I actually had a few chicks hitting on me because of it.

Yours is a fine example of a place where nobody could have an expectation of privacy, or peace and quiet.

Saw another footage of someone flying one around a pier at the ocean. A fisherman on the pier got pissed off and cast his line out to try and snag the drone. He got it on the second try but I don't recall what came of it. It seems most people are fine with one flying around cause I've seen many being flown in places with a large number of people (beaches, concerts..etc) and no one said anything or seem offended by it. Many stopped to watch and actually wave as it flew by.

Oh yeah I would not fly in a national/provincial park. It's illegal in most cases. I was thinking more of a normal forest kinda deal, where there's not really any jurisdiction that governs it. Though even then technically there is still some rules and what not like you can't just go build there.

I did fly mine at the local provincial park though, but I was not even going higher than the trees, and was just like a 5 minute thing, wanted to get a good view of the lake and mostly just messing around. My drone probably qualifies more as a RC toy as it's like the size of my hand. I stopped flying when other people showed up though, as respect. That's the thing, these strict rules would not be in place if people used common sense but there's always idiots that ruin it for everyone. People here are generally more lax about stuff like that though. Like this is pretty cool footage someone took around the city but if you were to go by the rules it would be pretty much illegal flying: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5D2BSoivxI But common sense was used in that video, it was not endangering anyone.

They do make some noise.
It's a PITA when you're trying to relax at a beach or take in the landscape in a natural hotspot or trying to concentrate in my home and some jerk keeps making this disturbing noise with his drone for tens of minutes.
It's not as bad 12 years old listening to rap on their bluetooth ghetto blasters but it's close.

I don't even care about the video stuff, I'm not doing secret stuff in public.
