This is ALMOST as bad as AMD versus Intel. ALMOST.

Very pointless debate--they're very different pets. If you have a very stable life (work 8 to 5, live in a home, plan to live there for quite awhile), dogs are great. I love dogs. As a college student in an apartment, they're very impractical, though. I work crazy hours. I like to travel, when possible. Dogs are MUCH higher maintenance. But you're not going to get that jumping up and down "happy to see you" behavior that you get from a dog with a cat. Cats seem to have a much bigger "range" of temperments. My current cat is very docile (which is a good thing... at 27 lbs, I would be scared of him if he wasn't.... he can jump from my floor to the top of the fridge).... and about 20% of the time, he's just like a dog--loves attention, likes to play. The other 80% of the time, he sleeps (or sits in my desk chair).

So.... to each his own. It depends on YOUR personality/life just as much as anything else.

P.S. Oh... in terms of cat intelligence... mine uses the toilet. And will flush about 80% of the time (unfortunately, he'll flush two or three times--he likes to watch the water go down)

The reason I dislike cats is simple, they suck. My neighbor had a cat when I was growing up. Every day when I'd come out of my house there it would be sitting on my porch to attack me. I had it trained after a while though. After it clawing, biting, and hissing at me I finally started punting the damned thing whenever it was on my porch. It stopped going on my porch. I do prefer dogs but not those attention whore ones who always want love. Hell, those things suck too. I like the little dogs that are independent but still know that outside is where they shoud take a sh!t. Dogs can smell bad but only if you let them in the house the whole time... and if you have more than one. Cats however smell horrible if they piss in your house and it LASTS. Also, my stepfather's cat brought half-eaten rats to the front door. He always called them presents I said sheeit that's no present it's just the cat didn't finish his god-damned meal. Yeah everything here that is not opinion based is true: I kicked the cat for attacking me, I had a dog who was good, more than one dog can really stink up a house, and that cat did too bring those fvcking rats to the door. Alright.

No, what he meant is that chimps are more of a "wild" animal, they have been domestic pets for years and years like dogs and cats, thus they are less susceptable to training.

But that's missing the point of the original argument. He said dogs are smarter because they're easier to train. I could probably train a retard to run at a dinner bell a lot faster than I could a Harvard professor. Does that make the professor less smart? If you're going to assert that dogs are smarter than cats, you need a better reason than easy trainability.

lol, you say i'm missing the point, yet you probably use the worst example EVAR in an attempt to prove something. and who says that the burden is on me to prove that dogs are smarter? how about you prove that cats are smarter? "trainability" isn't a hallmark of intelligence, but it says something to the capacity and capability of their brains to some extent.

i think it's you that missed the point of my original post - please go back and quote me on exactly where i state that dogs are smarter because they're easier to train. on one line i state that dogs are goofy, not stupid. then in an entirely different paragraph i talk about what purposes dogs serve in our society. aside from being excellent companions, they also compliment so many aspects of our lives, that's it's hard for many people so see their lives w/o the assistance of their dogs. cats, on the other hand, only compliment our society by lessening the rodent problem.

yes, cats make great pets in the sense that they are low maintenance. i love my cat. she's easy to take care, and she loves to snuggle by my feet and jump into bed and sleep w/ me. but dogs make greater companions and on top of that, many dogs serve our society in way unimaginable. tell me the last time you heard a cat protecting their owner from a home invasion.

want to see you train a cat to guide blind people, act as guards to protect a home, sniff out bombs from a plane, detect drugs inside a car, search for a dead or missing person, follow a trail of a murderer for miles. oh, and if you can't do that, at least try to teach your cat to come when you call it, or sit or laydown when you ask it to.

no need.... i just want them to kill the mice. and i don't have to train them to do that.

yea YOU dont need to, but blind people need someone to guide them. Ever heard of a guide cat?

we shouldent train dogs to guide blind people.

we should give them a migit cause its hard as hell for them to find jobs. and they speak fukinen english

its bad enough that someoen is blind. but now they gotta learn to speak DOG

Yo Doc I'm blind... whatchu got for me?

"Well why don't you take this dog and have the dog drag your blind ass around"

Cat piss is the worst smell in the world. There are some cats that are halfway decent. But it is a proven, well-researched fact that 90% of cats suck.. while only 10% of dogs suck.

Cats have bad atitudes and you cannot teach them to NOT bring in dead animals and leave their guts everywhere. Cats don't learn.

"Here is food. Eat it and forget everything. Now sleep somewhere inconvenient."

most cats actually wash themselves. that's not something you can say about dogs. my experience with both kinds of animals (and i love both) is that dogs universally stink much worse than cats AND tend to have worse breath.

cat piss does not smell if you get your cat "fixed," which tells me you or whoever you know who owns the cat is not a responsible owner.

most cats won't bring messy things into their home, but those who do are only doing it to share with you. try to find a dog that wants to share it's food with you.

Sorry, I used to doing gas appliance repair for 11 years and I could smell dogs at the front door, before it was opened. dogs stink...horribly.

Cat piss does smell... if you are goofy enough not to get the males fixed before they mature to the point where they begin to mark their territory in your house.
But it is a proven, well-researched fact that 90% of cats suck.. while only 10% of dogs suck
Cats do not suck... they don't drool, chase their own tails, crap on carpets or bark either (like 100% of stupid dogs)
Cats have bad atitudes and you cannot teach them to NOT bring in dead animals and leave their guts everywhere. Cats don't learn.
Cats don't have bad attitudes, they are just independant.. not attention whores like stupid dogs. as far as the dead animals are concerned..i don't believe you.
"Here is food. Eat it and forget everything. Now sleep somewhere inconvenient."
exactly... a dog couldn't pull that off and get away with it if it tried, they're too dumb.
.....god i hate dogs.

i like that way this man thinks.

Tho i dont hate dogs cats definitly dont suck. most dogs suck major anus. they either are always barking or sh!ting someplace. id say 90% of dogs suck where about 20% of cats suck

I have never seen such an ignorant opinion. They suck because their owners suck. They don't know how to train the dogs properly. If you put cats into those people's hands, those cats will suck even more! I train my dog pretty well, it always shits outside; whenever it barks, tell it "shut up" and it will stop.
I actually like both of them. Dogs are smarter but they are not as independent as cats. And cats don't smell, since they wash themselves, i need to bath my dog very often to keep my house free of smell.
