why do people get mad and/or speed up when you pass them on the road?

You pass = you send message that the other car is slow = if passed driver is butt-hurt, anonymous steel cage (ignoring windows) = extra butt-hurt baby.

Not saying I haven't done it before... I look back and I realize how retarded it was.

My commute is nothing where I live. I drive through 8 traffic lights on my 4.5 mile drive to work. My biggest frustration is that there is a mix of drivers here that make it dangerous to be on the roads. You have speeding meth heads mixed with SLOW old folks that need their licenses revoked.... When you get to an intersection, you have to pay a lot of attention to the speed cars are going because some will be doing 25mph in a 40....some will be doing 60mph in the city.... Either group run traffic lights often and cause accidents.

Looks like an accurate formula:

X = You
Y = They

(XΔv) + (YΔv + bh) = Ybh*10⁵⁰

I've always been a laid back driver. I only modify my course of action to respond defensively. I always laugh at people who think 5 over is too slow and speed up only to stop at a red light or end up several blocks down the line right next to me. Harder on the engine and brakes, these people.

Just today on my way home from school. Coming off the interstate I was stuck behind some asshat going 7 under the speed limit from the exit for about 5 mile through a town. When we went through the town I went to pass him (going 47 in a 55 at this point) and he sped all the way up to about 72 as I turned to pass him. This was with a car coming in the opposite direction. I barely made it by him before slamming head on into the other car. At this point he slammed on his brakes after I made it by and turned left at the next road to continue his drive. What an imbecile. He was going to turn in less than a mile and he decided to try and kill 3 people himself included instead of keeping going at 47 and making his turn.

Happens to me quite often as well. Sometimes at night, although everything I did was as safe as it possibly could be, the car I passed will flash their brights at me. People are trapped in miserable lives.

Another common thing:

I'll be on the highway driving around 70-75 and come up behind someone blocking the left lane next to slower traffic, or a semi, going about 60. I never drive right on their ass, but I'll stay 10 feet behind them so they know I'm there.

They'll ignore me for 30 second upwards, and then all of a sudden hit the gas and "angrily" drive away from me, as if they've "had enough". Of course, I will then pass them at whatever speed necessary to show they why I was behind them in the first place.

Why do people do this? Blocking the left lane driving under the speed limit is the one of the most dickish thing you can do on a highway.

What's infuriating is people who can't maintain speed. I'll be behind someone going 70mph, and be cool with that. Then they slow down to 60, back to 70, 65, 60, 70... Enough of this shit, I'm passing, 80mph! #$@!

Sorry, I bought a car without cruise control.

Also, I sometimes do this intentionally with the terrain - I drive in a lot of very hilly places.

i find it hard to believe that as many people as i see doing this, and as many people as are active on these forums, that we don't have someone here who does this regularly.

come on ... speak up! i wanna hear your reasoning!

My grandmother used to tell a story about her mother (my great grand mother) always whipping her horse when some one tried to pass her horse and buggy. Apparently, I'm descended from this madness in its original form.

Any way the excuses I've heard are that they were going the speed limit in the left lane so no one else should be going faster than that anyway. Which is why they speed up to 90 on two lane roads when I try to pass them in an effort to force a head on collision. They care about safety you see.

Worse than asshats going under on a two lane road is two of them going under on a four lane but splitting lanes is too easy on my Suzuki :D They never speed up when I do that because they're too busy shitting their pants.

I notice this as well, but another question I have is on a 2 lane highway (1 lane each way, not divided, 55mph speed limit typically) when a passing lane opens up, people and long haul truckers especially speed UP in the right lane. So if they were doing the speed limit, they'll step on the gas and get up to 70ish in the passing lane, but in the right lane. I don't get it, people can still pass, but now fewer can and when the passing lane closes they slow back down to 55.

This drives me insane. I used to have a commute where there was only one passing opening like this and the problem character would pull this move every time.

Both my ex and current girlfriends do this habitually. It drives me bananas and I have to bite my tongue to not say anything.

Best way to deal with it, (if it can be done safely) is to floor the gas and do like 90 MPH, just for a couple hundred yards until they're sufficiently behind you that they no longer feel the urge to pace you.

I'll speed up sometimes because you made me realize I was going slow, especially if you have a bigger car such as an SUV. I'm not getting behind that, it blocks my entire vision. Or it could be I just wanna race a little bit and have some fun. If your being a speeding douche then I will speed up to say F off and not let you in front, if your just speeding and I don't want too i'll let you go. Sometimes if you make me realize I was going slow I'll let you go ahead (just so you don't take my speeding up the wrong way) and bring my speed up.

Because they're ass faces, and can't bear to have someone else "get something over" on them. They're flawed humans, with malfunctioning brains.

^ Excellent.

It's really odd how they assume we're in bumper cars or something. They totally cowtow to me when I'm on my Suzuki but they're like a different kind of idiot when I'm driving a car.

Its the same thing in my 700 HP Cobra. Nobody wants anything to so with me and everybody goes 10 under with their dicks tucked between their legs.

In my beat up 20 year old Toyota, suddenly everyone is king of the road and is eager to get a piece of me. Esp chromed out ghetto trucks with every piece of 3M chrome you can buy on eBay.

With me it depends on attitude. Someone in a standard car that I have observed is maintaining a faster speed than me the whole time, I will move over and let them go and not care. If its someone in a slammed murdered out 350Z/G37/BMW/Mustang/Camaro/Corvette/riced Honda/etc that I've observed weaving and bobbing and acting aggressive and deliberately speeding up to start shit, and I hear them throttling up only right as they get in my vicinity, they will get raped so hard their ears will bleed.

If I take off from a light and one of said cars is next to me but not throttling up or creeping or showing any signs of dick waving, I start off slow and short shift and don't make a scene. Dont start shit, won't be no shit.

We all know the difference between someone just nonchalantly driving faster and who should be allowed to pass vs someone being an aggressive competitive douche trying to rub his dick on everything in sight.

If you don't...well pay attention more when driving.

People are generally like lions and deer. Predators and prey. Bullies and victims. I'm the third kind: the elephant, neither bully nor victim, that doesn't care about the other two and will happily mind its own business and leave the deer and lion alone, but will stomp your head in just the same if you antagonize or instigate for no reason.

Driving causes some interesting primal psychology in people. The fact that you're in a self contained area that belongs to you gives you the feeling of dominance, and when someone passes you or does something to remove your dominance, you get defensive (the same way you would if someone invaded your home). This is the main cause of road rage.

why do people get mad when you split lanes on a motorcycle? It's not like they're going anywhere.

I think that might be illegal here, cause I never see it. I don't have a problem with it in principle, but bikers that ride like assholes piss me off. They take stupid risks, and while the danger is largely on them, it could make the technical fault mine when something goes wrong. I don't care much about your health and wellbeing, but when it affects my wallet, I start to care.

I'm conscientious about driving around bikers, but I expect some sense on your part too. Help me keep you safe.

People have been driving poorly lately I chalk it up to one of the unemployed venturing out into the world.
