Why do people care so much about Xbox360 vs. PS3?

Well the issue is that:
It costs a lot of money to upgrade your computer, buy an xbox360, buy a ps3 and buy a revolution. So you discuss the merits of all of these and try to narrow out the lesser of the bunch, all the while knowing that you may very well end up buying every single one of them.
I never bought an Xbox and missed out on very, very few games that I actually wanted to play (Halo2, Call of Cthulu [where the hell is the pc version] and that samurai kotor). If I just bought one without ever thinking of the merits, I believe it would have been a large waste of money. Gamecube has more exclusives.
And this is coming from someone who has spent 700 in a single month on games alone.

6 months ago, I got Morrowind GOTY, which included both expansions from Target for $20.
It would cost ~$100 for the same for Xbox.
I bet it's cause Sony/Microsoft want kickbacks for under-pricing the consoles.
By the time the console hits the shelf, it's 1-2 years behind PC..
What gaming PC has less than 512Mb Memory, 20 gig HD?
And then there's people who praise god that the hardware doesn't change.
They'll never have the joy of picking up a ~3 yr old game for $10 and turn all the goodies on, with a recent "budget" video card.
Then when you open the game you find updated stats are either a add-on or a new $50 game.
In conclusion,
Best Games
Best Hardware
Best Value
No Kickbacks
No Ridiculous Margins
No ?saving/network use are an optional add-on?

When they get Photoshop to run on a console, and can use keyboard+mouse, talk to me.
Otherwise, the concoles are for the kids. Big peoples use the PC. 😉

Rebuttal:
1) Yes, all game manufactures have to pay the console manufacturer a licencing fee, ~$20/unit. PC developers have no such fee.
2.) You're right.. Not only do consoles have sub-par specs, MS want's different "price points", so developers can't rely on the 360 having a hard drive.
3.) I had "replay-ability" It's when the graphics are better when you revisit it. But don't worry, the water pixel will always be Aqua in SMB in the old folks home.
4.) I can play new and old PC games, and DOS games, and SNES, NES, GB, GBA, PS, N64, MAME, on a $150 video card. And in two years, I look forward to seeing 1280x1064, 8xAA, Tri-linear everything on a women's navel covered with transparent whipped cream 🙂

PurdueRy has it...people naturally place themselves into tribes. Frankly as a PC user, I'd think you'd understand that. There is the PC tribe, and within this are the ATI and Nvidia sub-tribes for instance. The tribe mentality explains how nvidia was able to sell the fx series, despite it being a turd.

Idiot. Morrowind GOTY is $20 for Xbox, just like PC. It's never been more than $30.
Most of the time, PC versions are more expensive than Xbox/PS2 counterparts. Fable TLC is a perfect example.
For me, I need botha PC and a console system.
In my situation a computer is really only for word processing, programming, internet access, email, music and storage.
A console is used for gaming.
For my needs, a $1000 PC will probably be all I ever need to satisfy my needs for maybe 5 years at a time. I don't do any heavy graphical work, so it's simply FAR too expensive to keep an up to date PC that can always play the latest games.
