Why do people buy tablets?

This is basically my stance on tablets. Although I can see why they're nice and I would definitely rather have one than a netbook. I've used a netbook before and it sucked. Very very slow and it's not really any more convenient to use than a laptop. You have to be sitting somewhere. A tablet you can use anywhere.

I am fine with just using my phone but it is quite small. I think if I didn't have a smartphone I'd consider getting a tablet instead, but I don't think I'd use both enough to justify the cost.

My iPhone and my Ipad does completely different things. I use my iPhone for communications oriented purposes and grab and go information access. I do not consume books, movies, videos, magazines, type up stuff, etc on my iPhone unless it's absolutely necessary.

You using your smartphone in this way ... is a bit like wearing high heels while running on a treadmill, when you haven't experienced what a pair of Asics can do.

It replaces a Laptop if you actually use a Laptop like a Laptop and not a Desktop. If you use a Laptop and it says on your desk all day, then it perfectly complements it.

It does not replace a laptop that is used like a laptop. Typing on a tablet sucks compared to a laptop with a physical keyboard. You also have to keep holding it while you use it, while a laptop you can just rest on your lap and look at the screen. It does complement a desktop, but it does not replace the laptop if you don't have a desktop.

Uh, keyboard + iPad = replaced Laptop.

moving around a 1.3pound iPad > moving around a 6 pound XPS 15

15 inch laptop is more than 2x screen real estate and much more useful.
Also, holding a 1.3pound iPad in your hand all the time < letting a 6 pound laptop rest on your lap or desk and moving it sometimes.

You forgot ... letting a 1.3lb iPad rest on your lap or desk and moving it often > your imagination.

Not even close. Even aside from capability and screen size, try typing on a keyboard while sitting on the couch and holding an iPad in your hand. I can rest a lap top on top of my lap and type.

If you like sitting in fetal position so that iPad is angled towards you when resting on your lap. I don't. Maybe I am not imaginative enough for it.

To me tablets are a love it or hate it type of thing.

I have no use for one. My gf's friend loves it because it's more "intimate" than a laptop.

I have one, but only because I won it in a contest. I have a 32" + 19" monitor decent computer with a nice comfy chair, and a phone that can do everything a tablet can do plus more, and I can carry it around... Tablet's don't really have a place in my life.

Congrats, You've just turned your tablet into a netbook.

Not even, it's probably going to tip over if you try resting that on your lap since the iPad is heavier than the keyboard. There is no mouse, so you have to use the screen for that. It's an ergonomic nightmare. You'd be better off just accepting that a tablet is not going to replace a laptop, and using it as intended, instead of losing the sleekness of a tablet just to get a really crappy netbook.

I don't like typing with one finger like a granny, sorry.

That granny is demonstrating how you consume content while resting it on your legs, or did you already forget what your original question was?

If you want to input content, I use mine like this:

Chairback and legs up and typing just about as fast as a regular keyboard. Also works on a desk, shocking I know.

She's holding it with her hand, not resting it on her lap.
A laptop lets you just leave it on your lap.

You can half ass it like that, but then half of your screen becomes your keyboard, so now the viewable real estate is not just half of what a laptop gives you, it's a quarter.
Is the iPad your only computing device?
Even Apple doesn't intend for it to replace a laptop. Last I checked, they aren't stopping their MacBook lines after releasing the iPad.

OK, there's no point in continuing this when you don't have eyes.

Well it was a crap picture.

She could have been saying "Theres no flash, where's the keyboard, this screen is too shiny where do I plug my memory stick in and whats with these huge bezels round the edge?"

Never use old people as an example of anything, they will fuck it up.
