Part of it is not a feeling of superiority, but disdain for those who do not care and CHOOSE to remain ignorant.

How can you respect someone who wants to watch Jerry Springer all day and thinks the sun revolves around the earth?

who says they want your respect, or even care that you dont respect them? who says your respect is a badge of any sort, and should be reached out for?

What I do not understand, however, is why these people feel that because they have learned about things like evolution, the solar system, or investment banking, they feel in any way superior to someone who is not as educated.

I can live a long, healthy, happy life not knowing about any of these things. The difference between knowing and not knowing in most cases is not much more than some feeling of accomplishment that you are in some way better than someone who is not privy to such information.

I find it funny how oftentimes the same people who call others complete idiots when they say they believe in God are the ones who get pissed when they hear an athlete who can't spell just signed a multi-million dollar contract.

Your garbage man knows just as much about quantum physics as many of you know what a vagina looks like.

I don't mind those trying to educate people, or those who take pride in pushing their mental capacity to the limit. Nor do I hold anything against an elder set in their ways. I do mind innocent people being ridiculed because they don't know, or don't care to know, about something that has little to no bearing on their everyday lives.

Hell, I'm well-educated. I have a technical job with decent responsibilities. However, I can assure you that I could do my job equally well thinking the sun revolves around the earth. And I think that holds true for the majority of you as well.

There's nothing wrong with being uneducated. Being ignorant is something else entirely. Really, even ignorance is excusable, as long as you don't think to challenge others with your opinions. You're always entitled to have an opinion, even one without support. You're not entitled to argue that opinion is as valid as someone else who has support however. You can live your life however you want, but when you begin to affect others or challenge others then you need to have some idea what you're talking about.

I'm an American, so I have no clue what goes on in other places in the world - ie, the UK. But here, knowledge != power. Power == power.

People who percieve themselves to be "smart" become very troubled when someone they percieve to be "dumb" has authority over them.
Fortunately the "dumb" people are a majority, so the "smart" people can never escalate to power where they can do real damage to the world.

I doubt they do care what I or anyone else thinks. If they could see past the TV in front of their face, they would realize the consquences to themselves and others.

So .. ignorance is bliss..

Do you respect people that choose to be ignorant?

I did not say I feel superior. I said I have trouble respecting people who CHOOSE to be ignorant.

We have set the education bar way too low and this country suffers for it.

There's a difference between "well educated" and "over educated." More often than not, most liberal-arts grad students are "over educated" and think they are superior than others, when in fact they are inferior because they wasted 2-4 years of their lives to pay to learn useless information.

Higher education is just a huge circle jerk and pat each other on the back society.

Knowledge and wisdom have nothing to with education.

Too often intelligent people (and people who think they are intelligent) are arrogant. They take pleasure in thinking that they are better than others. This is, in fact, a problem with the majority of the population in general. The truly smart people on this earth, however, are the ones who do not eschew wisdom in favor of scientific or academic pursuits, but complement their intelligence with Godly wisdom. Unfortunately, though, intelligent people, out of pride, just like many rich people, tend to ignore wisdom and the benefits of humility. I myself have been proudful at times, and I know how easily it can lead to sin and ruin.

When I say pride, I don't mean necessarily in a "I'm king of the world!" kind of way. I also mean the little prideful things that we do and think that involve placing higher interest in ourselves rather than others. Humility, in contrast, is knowing exactly who you are in the eyes of God and in the grand scheme of this universe. People with true humility serve (even in positions of leadership) rather than control. It is something that, sadly, very few politicians of either party possess in this day and age. Leaders who are like Nehemiah and Joshua are what are needed in this country, whether it's leadership in families, the federal government, or any level in between.

I would say the same thing about people that devote themselves to jobs/careers. People have different values and interests. Not necessarily better or worse, but different.

Sometimes Intelligence is Superiority, just depends on the discussion. What is truly annoying is when people throw Titles/Career experience around as if that in itself lends credibility to a discussion. Not that it doesn't, but it certainly doesn't excuse illogic or make Opinion fact.

"An unquestioned life isn't worth living." I take this statement to heart. I admit that I may be pretentious/arrogant to those who don't progress in their mental faculties. This would appear to be you.

"It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied." You keep living your life full of blissful ignorance while I continue to be better than you. Thank you, you've made my year.
