why do manufacturers insist on using blue leds?

and especially on equipment that will frequently be used in the dark.

you know what I *don't* want when I'm watching a dvd? a bright blue led shining right into my eyeball and lighting up half of my living room.

I've been shopping online for a new car radio and it's like I can't even find one that has all the features I want but doesn't have bright neon blue lighting.

Blue's still trendy. It's the new "hip" color. I like amber leds. I have a flash drive that glows amber. I like to see that color more widely used.

Blue LED's are not cheaper, but they are "cool" so everything has to have them nowadays.
I hate it too. I want all my gadgets to be perfectly dark when I need them to be. Do not like excessive light I cant control.

I love my Razer too, but I'd like to be able to disable the light once in a while. Wonder if there is software to do this.

I completely agree!

I have an Olevia LCD TV in my bedroom and it has one of those damn blue led lights on the front of it that turns on when the TV is off.

In the menus of the TV there's actually an option to disable the LED but the TV is such a POS that it only actually turns it off maybe a quarter of the time.

Worst damn TV I've ever bought. Really makes me regret getting the cheapest one I could at the time. And of course they're out of business now so no hope of a firmware update.

I hate the insanely bright ones, I always cover up blue LEDs with black electrical tape.

My parents told me I was a blue light special. Almost as good as sears and a lot cheaper.

This!! Mine has had black tape over the power button since the first night. You must have gotten a later rev of the menu. I couldn't find that option.

I bought a new clock radio a few years back with the cool trendy blue numbers. I can't wait for it to break so I can go back to old school red or an amber.

I just bought a JVC Arsenal KD-A815 for that reason, I adjusted the colors to match the other colors inside my car. Screen and button area are independant, and there is a night and day setting (headlights on or off) Check it out... Awesome head unit.

it's so retarded, my laptop has the brightest blue led I've ever seen as its power indicator. there's an option to turn off the lights, but it only works when the laptop is on. once it's powered off, the light goes on  I usually end up throwing some clothes of it or something.

I think its because Blue LEDs are cheaper.

heh definitely not. they were the last to be commercialized -> most expensive out of all the available colors.

green and red are the least distracting, blue at even the lesser drive levels tend to pierce through the dark.

In Canada, blue is conservative and red is liberal. Conservative conspiracy :hmm:

For that reason alone, I despise the blue LEDs in my Thermaltake case, even though they look cool.

The green LED on my speaker and green and orange LEDs on my modem more than compensate, however ;).

The people that think they are cool should be made to watch an LED backlighted TV - with backlight LEDs changed out to royal blue - of course! :D

My D-Link Gaming Router is really bad when it comes to its piercing blue LEDs. Back in my first apartment, it was facing my bed and I had to put a thick piece of junk mail in front of it just so it wouldn't annoy me while trying to sleep.

Most of my cases have them these days and depending on positioning, they can be alright. My current Cooler Master case has them on the top and so does my Silverstone case.

On my speakers, there's abright blue LED on the center speaker, so it's meant to be facing you directly. A black Sharpie toned it down quite a bit.

I also bought a nice MP3-capable deck for my car; it too had blue LEDs inside, so bright (even when they dimmed with the headlights on), that it was difficult to see well at night. I opened up the face and put black permanent marker over all of the diffused white plastic portions, and over the LEDs themselves. Now it's quite tolerable.

Blue LEDs seem to have an effect almost like a blacklight - a blacklight will make your retinas glow, which creates a weird visual haze anywhere you look. Blue LEDs seem to do something similar.

I also had one of those very nice Sunbeam fan controllers, with the red/blue LEDs on the front. That problem solved itself after awhile - they overdrive those things so hard that they aged rapidly, and dimmed considerably after only about 2 months.

I like the blue LEDs and most of the time they aren't too bad, but I do have a USB hub that could land a plane in a hailstorm.
