Why do gay men talk so funny?

Is it simply to draw attention to their sexuality? I mean, I don't think being gay would change any horomones. There must be a logical reason for it.

er.... do you have any gay friends?

No, but I mean, shows like Queer Eye, and talk shows with homosexual on it, usually the guys talk lispy or with a weak type voice. I'm not sure what to call it or what its called.

 Like I said, I'd kill the Pope if Lewis was still alive, but alas the greatest man in history wasn't able to make it. I understand your question, but I don't understand why you care...

I've met plenty of non-gay males that had a more feminine voice.

Amazing, I was just about to post something similar in the thread about negroes. 😛 No lie!

You sure about that? Don't "gay-acting" (voice, mannerisms, etc) kids develop in environments (i.e. more conservative places) where they are taught to be straight, and lack gay role models? I doubt they receive telepathic messages from the gay mothership about how to "act gay."

he might care b/c there's the stigma/stereotype that gay men 'talk' as above mentioned.

::shrug::

as someone said ^, i doubt it's anymore than any other 'group' in the population, there's just more people who hates gays than not so they get the flak about it i suppose.

Actually, I did wonder about that after reading David Sedaris's Me Talk Pretty One Day. From what he writes there, it seems he (and a couple other boys he talked about, from the speech therapy story) developed certain mannerisms, including a lisp, at a really young age, before being exposed to gay society.

So, I don't know.

I undrestand his question, but I don't understand why you care about his question.

The reason:

Many gay men grew up feeling oppressed. They lived in fear that their peers would make fun of them for the way they feel, or even pose physical harm. This caused them to hide their feelings...

Somewhere along the way, homosexuals started standing up for their rights to live the way they want. They wanted to let the world know that they're no longer going to live in fear of their peers. This causes them to act much differently...they want people to know they're gay without them having to say it...without them having to hide it.

I took a diversity class last semester and we had a "homosexual day" and invited a couple of people from spectrum in to speak. This was their explanation when this question came up. I have to say that I never thought of it that way. I never understood the lisp until then. It's their way of expressing themselves and showing the world who they are...

On what reasoning?

I think it's pretty widely felt that gay people generally have different hormone levels than straight people. I would go search for some numbers, but I gotta get to bed. 😉

But I don't think that's reason to lock the thread.

The effeminate oneth often have lithpth and thay thuper.

But there's a roughly equal number of gays who are naturally quite masculine, and don't even wear leather pants!

We all have straight friends who are soft-talkers, but I htink they feel more social pressure to be manly, so it doesn't show as much.

I've seen some research that suggests femininity in males is uncorrelated with sexual orientation; I'm not so sure of this, but they definitely don't go in lock-step.
