I'm not going to get too personal here, but I think a lot of you are missing with this thread is. Life is not fair dammit and we all know that. It is up to us to ignore such an insult and try to carry on with life. It is hard to feel bad and hate yourself, but pretty much every person does. All the plastic surgery, exercise, hair coloring, flea-baths(maybe not that), and trendy clothes won't change who you really are. It's simple to my opinion:
If you have a genetic defect it is not something you can do anything against, and you have to make it part of your life.
If you're living off McDonalds and as a consequence are 600lbs you are a menace to society and should not wear tight clothes. If it's your ('you' as humans in general not an attack on someone only 15lbs above their perfect weight) own personal choice to become a monstrosity you shouldn't bother others with it. Why do you think people want drugs users off the street? They're a bad example to kids and it looks terrible. Same should go for obese people.
I completely agree... Well, except that little part... It's what, society's lifestyle? lol... Not really sure what you meant to say there.Originally posted by: Mill

My weight is not genetic I don't think. I'm referring to something else I won't mention on this board... but I understand what you are saying. There is a clear difference between weighing 600lbs off a diet of lard, and wanting to shed 10-40lbs because you ate too much in college or got married and kind of let go a bit. I don't have a single problem with anyone who is overweight, but some people who are overweight just don't care. I'd say most people in this thread are trying to lose vanity pounds, or they were skinny and now want to lose the weight they gained. I doubt anyone in this thread was even 400 lbs, but I bet some 400lb people were reading. Being even 75-100lbs overweight isn't as big of a deal as people who are freaking 400-500 lbs. If your weight causes health problems then I consider it to be a massive problem. Vanity pounds and weight gain due to low activity is something people struggle with because of America's sedentary lifestyle.
I think a lot of people with weight issues have other underlying problems that lead to their gain. A lot of people here critisize people for being the slightest bit overweight, but there are tons of things out there that cause weight gain. Some of it is genetic, some is due to depression, some is due to another medical issue, and some of it is due to a sedentary job with a tight schedule. America's problem with obesity is not just due to individual lifestyle. When you have 30-40% of the population overweight that says something about our society.
We've got to start changing our unhealthy habits(I'm sure I am one to talk), but our society has blame as well.

I used to be quite big, around 200lbs all throughout middleschool and jr. high.
When I was 16, I started caring about my weight, reading nutrition books & eating healthy. From 16 to 18, I lost over 50lbs.
It was and should be a slow process. It's not easy to change habbits and lifestyles that you've been in for perhaps your whole life. And of course, the most important thing is the want to change.
I did it by changing only the diet aspect of my lifestyle. I didn't go to the gym or try to increase my physical outout at all. That's probably one of the reasons it took so long, but I didn't mind.. because changing my diet was also a gradual process, it fit together.
If you can get off your lazy ass and get to the gym a few times a week, you could do just that much better.
People who complain about being 5 or 10lbs overweight.. pfft. Just go take a sh!t.![]()

I'm not saying society is at fault. I am just saying American Society is now largely sedentary due to office jobs and so many things being automated. People hardly bike or walk anywhere... they go through the drive thru, they eat fast food, they work in an office from 8-5. They don't sweat in a factory anymore or work out in the fields.
American diets are terrible. We are still relying on fad diets and wacko nutrition to carry us thru our obesity problem. In other countries people are more active and their diet is more suitable for their jobs and their activity level. In America we have so many choices and so much money that people are eating everything that is bad for them and then thinking they can diet it off. The South has the worst obesity problem of any area in the US. People here still eat tons of starches and high fat food thinking they are going to work in the fields and are going to be hit by another Great Depression at any minute. I have a basic understand of nutrition and I try to eat right, but damn choices can be limited at times. It is 100% my fault that I don't eat as good as I should, but I don't think a fad diet is going to help anyone. They may lose weight for a couple of years, but it normally comes back. The best thing people can do is get exercise and eat a consistent diet that DOESN'T deprive them of certain types of food. America puts freaking refined sugar in everything. You can't get a damn beverage or food without tons of freaking Corn Syrup or the like in it. Cane sugar wasn't that much better, but these sugar heavy products with refined sugars or carbs are everywhere. It is hard to go to the grocery store to find decent food.
I've started to rely more on making things from scratch than buying anything that is processed and loaded with crap.

I've started to rely more on making things from scratch than buying anything that is processed and loaded with crap. The reason I say society is because Americans are typically ok with eating fast food at least once a day or several times a week. They are ok with eating things that contain loads of sugar and corn syrup. We as a society have yet start demanding better food. Low-fat high carb products won't work. High fat low carb products aren't going to work. We need to follow the guidelines that say x% protein, x%, carbs, x% fat. It doesn't matter if you drink two cokes as long as it fits into your requirement of your carb percentage. Burning more calories than you take in is the basic way to lose weight, and then you adjust your diet to be healthy and maintain the calorie rate for your diet. I've decided to make a log with all the nutrition %'s for my next week of food. I'd like to see other AT'ers do that as well. I bet if we can compare we would see that a vast majority of people here(including myself) don't follow the recommended guidelines. I think part of that is because it is damnable hard to not eat and drink what everybody else is eating and drinking. I lack willpower but I'm about to change all that.Originally posted by: EliI completely agree... Well, except that little part... It's what, society's lifestyle? lol...
