I'm sorry, are you a 5 star general that I need to know about?

Just commenting on the apparent delusion you have on the preference for a politician without political experience or the belief that a 5 star general can do whatever he wants.

Back to our regularly scheduled thread, the OP should make the management aware of his role.

You're not making any sense. If the person that's already there doesn't have the experience it will show in their work. The company has had a chance to see how they work so they have a better idea how much they're worth. Hiring someone new is more of a risk because there are more unknowns.
How is it an unknown if the new person has to take a test that measures their skills in certain subjects prior to getting an interview?

Just doing my part to make you aware of your delusion and that not everyone cares about politics.

First, you spend way more time in P & N than I do
Second, I don't care about politics but, I don't stick my head in the sand because I don't like them. A President without knowledge of politics would be a foolish President.
Third, How did your poor example become an issue in this thread?

OP, you should make management aware of your roll, for the second time.

You made it an issue -- which also happens to be your opinion that it was a poor example. Which by the way, admittedly, was based on a misunderstanding of the OP on my part.

Edit: And the only way you spend less time than me in P&N is if you've never clicked on that link even by accident. I rarely go there.

Someone comes in doing the same work I do, I expect them to make comparable salary.
If they make more...I don't give a shit. They make less...that's their problem. Should have been more aggressive at the interview.
My peers are my peers. Salary should be in same ballpark with a little variation to allow for negotiation skills during hiring process.

Is this thread meta? Are we like the talented new guys trying to ask pertinent questions until the "experienced" OP successfully communicates what the thread is about?

Salary at a given level of the hierarchy should depend on negotiation skills??? If anything they should try to ignore negotiation skills. Variations in compensation should be as correlated to productivity as possible. This incentivizes behavior that is valuable for the firm and rewards the skills that actually matter in a workplace. Why would you want a candidate's ability in some arbitrary hiring process that has little to do with what they actually contribute to be a driver of salary?
