Not true. They'll ticket you and tell you that "I know you've sped at some point today."

At which point you ask to see their radar and if they can't produce then there's no grounds for a ticket.

Proof?

How about a link to a law that says they have to show you a radar if asked? Or one that says that if they don't produce one, your ticket is voided?

::shrug:: he got one, he's fighting it though. I never claimed it was valid, just that he got a ticket and wasn't speeding

Gotcha.

Don't feel bad as I've heard that rumor as well.

I only knew that you wouldn't be able to produce proof because I have asked to see radar on multiple occasions.

Its the civics. I remember on a beach trip with a bunch of my friends. Front car was in a chevy trailblazer (who happened to be about a mile ahead, since the middle car switched drivers), a silver civic coupe in the middle, and me in my gold camry in the back.

The civic's owner/original driver had just switched off like 5 miles before with one of our friends, a guy who happened to have one of those long anime style asian haircut. My car had my gf in the passenger seat, and 3 girls in the back.

We passed this motorcycle cop on the side giving someone a ticket going 73-75 in a 65 zone. About half a mile later, I see him zooming up in my rear mirror (me also being in the back of a trail of cars, right behind my civic friend in hte middle of a 3 lane) and start going crap, I'm getting a ticket. Instead, the cop pulls to the left of me, gives me a look, then speeds up a bit, cuts me off, and pulls over the civic.

It's not just red cars, my mom got tagged in her black Eclipse on 81, going 86 in a 70, just keeping up with the semis. Cars were passing her in the far left lane, and the cop didn't even actually SEE her untill he came out from behind the semis.

Beats me, as it probably varies by state. Maybe there's no law/bylaw whatever at all. All I know was my friend and I were pulled over for supposedly going 15 over. We knew it was a crock because the area was/is notorious for speeding traps and we always set cruise for just under the speed limit going through there. When my friend asked to see the radar gun the cop got huffy and said we were free to go because he didn't actually clock us. So I guess I'm just assuming, but it seems reasonable to me, that without any documentable proof (dash-cam, radar), how can you be issued a speeding ticket? Do states/local gov'ts actually trust their cops enough that they assume the cops won't just pull random people over in sporty looking cars and "make up" that they were speeding?....'cause I sure don't.

[edit] This was in Wisconsin.

It does entirely depend upon the state you are in......take SC, where I got my last speeding ticket...9 over...the police do NOT have to show the "victim" any radar reading, etc. Thankfully I did not incur any points on my license due to GA not pointing licenses for speeding until you are at least 15 over. Less than that and it's only the price of the ticket...no points. But since this was my first in two decades, could've survivied the points if any had been levied anyway.

still good looking for 94

Well I didn't pay $8k (actually, after everything was all said and done, including driving it back to NJ, it did almost come out to that much). I'm definitely gonna take a hit selling it, but hopefully after replacing it with a family sedan (maxima or accord) I won't have to worry as much...

As far as getting a ticket goes: were you speeding? If so, then you knew the risks of getting a ticket. I've gotten a speeding ticket before. Did I deserve it? Yep, I was speeding.

I speed, but I don't whine about when I get a ticket. And if I got 8 points in one month, I'd probably change my driving habits. One of them was allegedly for 3 mph over, so I imagine that wouldn't be more than a 2 point ticket anywhere in the country. So unless he did something REALLY bad, that's at least 3 tickets in one month. Quit driving badly.

I see SUV's speeding like crazy right in front of me, but the cops keep tailing my shiny red car instead. I never had this problem when I drove my ugly silver civic sedan....

Guess who won't be buying a WRX anytime soon.

Eight points in ONE MONTH?! Doesn't your license get suspended at 6?

Thats what I thought, until I looked at the back of my latest speeding ticket and it said something like 13 points over the course of 3 years or some crap. It was either 13 or in the 20s. I don't recall the exact number because it was so rediculously high that I started laughing.

Anyways, does anyone know which car appears to be moving the slowest? My next car will be that color. Is it brown? Does anyone sell a tar colored car with yellow dashes? :)

Oh and I actually drove past someone the other day who was going the actual speed limit in the middle lane of a 3 lane highway. 55 in a 55. The flow of traffic looked like a river breaking around a standing rock. Cars were passing it to the right and left almost continously. Was kind of crazy to watch.

I speed. Yep I do. But I don't cry about it when I get a ticket. Last one I got was 4 years ago.

Simple. If you cry about it. Don't speed. Especially if you already accumulated lots of points on your record.

It wasn't a ticket for 3mph over, I was exaggerating. First one was for a 45 in a 25 (he didn't really know how fast I was going but said he was going to guess). Yesterday it was a 45 in a 30. Later that night I was driving home and saw a couple cops on the side, I was doing 35 in the 35, as soon as I passed him he turned his lights on and started pacing me. The two SUV's in front of me sped off at maybe 50mph on the two-lane highway, but he seemed insistent on pacing me down the whole damn highway. That was fun.

haha, try driving an STi/Evo. You want to talk about cop magnets? Those rear wings are like honey to flies. I'm glad mine is gone, I rarely get a second look when passing a cop now. Before, I could follow the cops head turn as I drove by. Not a good feeling :(

I can imagine (I wished I could afford an STi...even if I could, I probably couldn't afford insurance anymore :D)

it has to do with the color, the waveleingh of red light appears faster to the human brain then say Blue, even when traveling at the same speed, studies have been don e to prove this

Indeed. I speed on the freeways, but I definitely try not to speed on the surface streets... sometimes, though, I go 3 to 4 miles over the limit on surface streets.

Red cars are a taboo. Cops look at anything sporty-looking and fast nowadays -- white, yellow, silver... If you're speeding, they'll give you a ticket. If you're speeding and you're a girl, well, that's another story. ;)
