Why do companies design cars that look like ass?

Is it because their designers have terrible taste? Because of technological barriers? Or some kind of strategic positioning? There are some cars that look great like the Mazda 6, and then there's the Element.

Because some people in a market survey or a focus group think that something like the Element looks cool. I think the thing looks like a damn toy but I guess it must sell if they keep on making it.

Cause people interpret looking like ass as being cool and innovative, and each company has to be the coolest and most innovative so you get a bunch of cars that look like ass.

because car manufacturers have to guess what's gonna be crispy 5+ years out. that siht aint easy. the early adoption curve on must stuff peaks out at like three years.

for example, who saw crunk juice coming? i know i did. but did you? no. thats because i'm cooler than you.

BURN! 😛

hahaha, nice.

The answer is because people with terrible taste buy it. And other people with somewhat better taste, but no backbone, see people buying it and THEY have to buy it. Before you know it we are bombarded with Elements, Scion xA's and xB's, and Azteks (well, not too many people bought those...)

I don't understand threads like this. Taste is relative. Secondly, not everyone cares what their cars look like. A Car to lots of people is simply "Point A to point B", where other people it may be all about the looks, the curves, the rims, the paint, etc. What looks like ass to you might just register to another as "cheap, reliable transportation."

I've always wondered if they made cheap econoboxes look like @$$ on purpose so less people would buy them. I really don't get the rationale behind that though since they made it to sell, didn't they ? If so, why not make it better looking so it would sell even more ? I mean, look at the Echo. WhoTF dreamed that thing up ? All it really needs is a few curve adjustments and it would probably sell a ton more.

Oh I have a theory... the cheap econoboxes' design team are the cheapest engineers to be found anywhere... and thus have no taste. That must be it.

Okay, but these ugly ass cars are obviously making somewhat of an effort to have a cool, stylish design. Thus assuming that some sort of importance is placed on looks.

Hell why don't you leave off the fvcking paint job and save a few bucks.

I believe crunk juice is the new Lil' John album. Just saw some ad on TV for it. I can't take that guy seriously after Chappelle did him.

I hear what you're saying, in your opinion there are ugly ass cars. Your opinion is certainly vaild, and you can choose whether or not to purchase the car. However said ugly car may be targeted to a completely different demographic/market, whom may think it's great looking, cool and stylish. That's all I'm trying to say. Lots of people don't even consider looks or style when choosing a car.

But you could before that? 😕

Yeah, a lot of people don't care about looks, but for the people that do, there usually isn't a huge variation in taste. If you asked 100 random people how the element looks, more than 80 would probably say bad.

In BMW's case, people were starting to complain that their cars were nothing but "the same sausage in three sizes (3,5,7)" so they told Chris Bangle to spice things up a bit in the hopes of further product differentiation. Perhaps his designs alone would have been okay, but adding iDrive was too much for the Bavarians to bite off at once IMO.
