Why do college students fail?

personally, i don't think they're so much harder as they are more time-involving. The class is relatively easy...but divulging all your time to understanding some concepts and doing elaborate projects is the killer.

Biggest one would be the extreme difference between high school and college. I just got back from an academic advisor, and I am one of those "losers"...I have no motivation to study really, and this is my 3rd year now. I lost my g/f of 2.5 years, and that in addition to the depression I already had, has made life utterly horrid. I was able to admit that I needed help only a few weeks ago...isn't gonna help my academic situation, but hopefully I can sort some other stuff out.

Other than that, it's just the freedom and the partying. At UM, since it's such a big school, the profs never know you personally, so you don't feel like you're accountable to anybody...you get in a hole that you find out is too deep to get out of, and it just snowballs.

Hell, if you want to write a f*cking paper, just PM me and you can write about me. ^_^

I really hate these students who have mommy and daddy paying for their college and then they don't take advantage of it and screw around and either fail or barely scrape by. I have to pay my own way and have a full time job and go to school when I can. It's going to take me like 7 years to finish my degree this way.

Nope, their much harder ... at least in science & engineering.
As others in this thread have said, I coasted through H.S. with zero effort. H.S. is a joke.
Got my a$$ kicked freshman year of college cuz I actually had to study.

Wait till your A-Levels, im doing mine right now (Maths, Physics, Design and ICT) , _they_ are your time consumers...

cool, those are exactly the ones i wanna do. but i dunno about design. i can't wait till A level physics cause gcse is far to easy, and me likes physics 😎
what do you think of maths? it's that i 'enjoy it' or whatever at GCSE, but it is usefull
and ICT i'd have to go to a college to do. whats that like. I tried GCSE IT once but that was bullSh!t, just excel and 'what is email' 'how does a barcode scanner work'

what design are u doin? i am currently doin GCSE electronics, wihch is alrite, dunno if ther eis anywhere round here u can do A level electronics, but i not really bothered.

i agree...it's not too much harder...just that we became more lazy after we realize we have so much freedom...no more parents to bug you "have u finished ur hw!?" heeee

i took science and engineering classes too. the main reasons i think most people thought there were hard were b/c: (1) Most kids were lazy (2) Problem Sets due every week, and most people waited til the last minute to do them..unlike hs where they essentially force you to turn in homework everyday (3) The tests were "hard" but mainly it was hard to beat the curve and people waited until the last minute to study...

I'll tell you why I almost failed out of college. It's because high school is a worthless waste of time that a smart monkey could complete. I went to one of the best high schools in the state too.

I wasn't ready for doing tons of work and readying to just pass.

Drugs and alcohol don't play as big of a part as you might think. I only got drunk a few times freshman year and almost got kicked out. Sophomore year I was drunk more than sober, and I managed a B average.

Everybody just has to learn how to study for themselves, unfortunately some people learn too late.

parties, family/friends/relationship problems, staying out too late, computer, internet, games and laziness.

they actually have risk categories for students. Some of my business profs and several of my socio/psych prof's lectured about them (generally at least). If memory serves, they gave a list of 15-20 things. You answered yes or no to the questions, the more you answered yes, the more at risk you were to drop out or fail. The questions were something to the affect of...do you commute more then 20 miles to your classes, do you work 40 hours or more a week, do you spend more time in a class the you do studying for it, do you have children (if so are they over 12), are you single, are you still undecided after your 2nd year, do you attend school functions, are you over 10k in debt, has it been 5 years since you attended an educational institution, etc... I'm sure im forgetting the good questions, but they seemed quite relavent to my life at that point and illustrated many others i knew quite well.

I can tell you why I fail... High school was too easy. Didn't ever study, half-assed homework, didn't pay atention in class and made straight A's. Without good study habits, it's very easy to fail classes in college

When i try to study i get distracted by the wall in my room ;-)

Me? I was 16 and too irresponsible. Other younger people are responsible, I wasn't. Didn't help that my roomate, and my friend both never went to class.

After my mom died in Feb, I just stopped going.
