Exactly. My sister thinks the bus is "ghetto" even though it would save her hundreds in gas bills plus save time and wear and tear on her car. Thank god I take the metro I save time, at least 300 a month and I don't have to worry about being late.

it became the norm...people living over an hour away from work isn't uncommon...most can't afford (or want to live in the bad areas) near their work.

My life is much too valuable to be spending a significant percentage of it driving to/from work. Even if there was a job that paid more, but was a longer commute (and presuming I couldn't move, for whatever reason), I doubt I'd take it. My time is worth a hell of a lot more than some cash.

Then why work at all?

I think CA and HI
gas prices are the highest in the nation.

Don't know what Cali's is right now...but reg unleaded is $2.37 gal right now here :(

No commute though...the islands are small
longest commute = 2hrs.

It's pretty tough to provide for your family without a job.

Heh, yep, that's what we're paying. Well, its what I'd be paying if my car used regular. Premium is about $2.55 right now. That was of Tuesday when I last filled up.

No way I would want a long commute. I'm not spending a large portion of my life in a damn car.

I'd move elsewhere or spend a lot of money to get a small place close to work.

I'm originally from LA though.

When modern LA was biult, the freeway system was biult along w/ it. I guess that's why So Cal is so big in the car culture thing..

Look @ chicago's freeway/highway/expressway or whateverway system. It's horrid, and it's just one humoungous loop. U miss a stop, and you have to either get off and pay another toll, or go through that whole loop again (I'm NOT a chicago native, so i'm pretty sure there are better routes and shortcuts, but I was pretty damn frustrated when I visited)

And why are a lot of the exits there numbered only? "yaa..exit the exit number 5, turn left on whatever stree.."

just have the street name along w/ it damn it.

It really felt like chicago's freeway/expressway/whateverway system was biult around an existing sprawl fo a city. It's the same for NYC. Florida is a lot more like CA though.

anyways,
hey nutbucket, i thought you attend cal poly pomona. Walnut and DB are NICE areas
well, pomona and them are pretty ghetto, but walnut and the residential areas around Mt. sucaSac are really nice. And isn't cal poly more towards the nicer area? It doesn't seem like it's in pomona.

I used to drive to work (San Jose). Now I have a new job in a different direction (Oakland), so I take the BART train. Sometimes, I prefer having to drive. I don't know why, I guess it's being able to control when I leave. When I take BART, I have to plan based on the BART schedule. If I don't leave work by a certain time, I have stay another 15 minutes or so, or wait around at the BART station. Sleeping on the way to work is a plus though.

i doubt it. stations are charging 2.69 for regular right now and traffic is as heavy as ever. we're just used to the commute, and we're used to paying a lot for gas, so it doesn't bother us as much.

<-- norcal, commutes ~500 miles a week.

Yes, and in the last 50 years, the population has exploded and there's been hardly any more freeway development.

One of the main reasons that I am at work @ 6:30 is that I have commuting. I take the bus read for 20 min then I have a 2 block walk to work. If I left even an hour later it would add about 15 min to my commute.

The commute to my store is around...1.9 miles. Still hurts when I pay $2.49/gal for Premium even at Costco.

I used to live in Huntington Beach and commute to San Diego for a year and a half. It wore on me, and I then found a house 10 miles from the office, rather than 90 :p

I don't mind the commute that much, I suppose, but CA drivers, as much as people make fun of them, are some of the best drivers in the nation, and that makes things a bit easier.

I don't really have a choice. I live about 28 miles away from work but it takes me anywhere from 30-60 minutes each way. I try to leave around 5:30-6:30 am just to beat the rush. Afternoon it doesn't really matter what time I leave as there is always traffic. I've been trying forever to find a job down by my house. Heck, I'm willing to even work for a lot less money just to have the convenience of working close to home. Sad thing is that there is not much Engineering work down where I live.

Isn't it ironic the state with the highest density of tree huggers, greenies, and eco-terrorists, is where the highest volume of fuel is wasted commuting? Hypocritical SOBs bitching about the rest of the country buying SUVs. All the while squandering twice as much fuel on their two hour daily commutes, as the midwest soccer mom in her full size SUV.

The tree huggers complain about california just as much. your entire argument is flawed.

My favorite part about NYC traffic is being able to see the building where you work from across either river and yet it still takes > 1 hour to get there.

I drive around 75-85 miles everyday. It includes school and work.
I dont mind it - takes about 2 to 2.5 hrs out of my day because of traffic.
But I have gotten used to it - just the So.Cal. lifestyle I guess.
