Why do Britons pronounce St. John as "Sinjin"?

And they toss about 7 extra syllables into aluminum.

The British spelling for element 13 on the periodic table is different than the American spelling, so of course they pronounce it differently.
British spelling: aluminium
American spelling: aluminum

Why wouldn't it be like the "oo" in "loot" or "boot" or "pool?"
