Not terribly on FWD, but it is on RWD when the ass end starts to go for a walk with or without you.

Its scary cause you know those tires are expensive. I hope to bring a RWD monster to life that can spin them at that speed, but so far I've only had the FWD experience.

Is that from locking up the brakes? There are not that many cars that can break-loose at 70MPH let alone a TL.

edit: I used to get a lot of people wanting to race when I had my Acura (think Aluminum)but I usually just laughed it off, now with kids in the car I stay as far away as possible from tiny-dicked morons.

A squawk would be a better description. Just keep your foot on the throttle, clutch in, move 6th to 3rd, let out clutch.

This guy was being an ass and his ass got handed to him. Sure the TL is no monster, but it's geared really well for highway speeds. You can hang with/beat a 350z.

well, significantly more power usually means a quicker car. a 530i was giving me trouble in my Accord the other day because I had the gall to honk at him when he came to a dead stop on a 2-lane highway to let oncoming traffic turn in front of him. He was brake-checking, driving slow, waving around, just generally being a nuisance. The road added lanes and I eventually pulled around to pass. He gunned it to try to cut me off. He had this look of disbelief as I blew by, with his engine audibly straining. Probably a similar power/weight comparison as the 330i/TL matchup. He eventually got a big head of momentum from way back and passed me at 90 on an uphill grade. I caught him in seconds, then let him go. Afterwards I felt stupid about even engaging with the guy. Sometimes we just do stupid stuff on the road, but there's no excuse for it. Better to just ignore them until they stop.

Not like the TL or Accord are super sporty, or even as good of all-around cars as a 3 or 5 series BMW, but people just assume that anything with a BMW badge is faster than anything else on the road. The big sellers (small engine models) are slower than plenty of family sedans in terms of straight-line numbers.

Lol that's true. I nearly n00bed myself to death with a '96 anniversary edition vette, downshifting to 2nd at around 45mph and gunning it. It was like riding a pissed off bull on speed, and while it was fun, it was an incredibly stupid thing to do, wiggling all over the road. I'm lucky I didn't end up with my headlights pointed the wrong way, or kissing a tree.

Or have a utility pole in your passenger seat 😛 Thats gotta be even more scary in a feather weight like a Vette with less weight to keep the wheels stuck to the ground and less inertial feedback warning you of impending balance changes.

First and last time for everything ;P

Thought corvettes were in the low 3000's. By no means heavy, especially considering the power they put out, but I tend to reserve "featherweight" for things like the Elise.

How big was this highway? If you were willing to race him, then it was obviously empty enough to just drive on the second to last lane anyways, right? I mean I drive wherever I'm comfortable, so long as I'm not flying by other cars in the far right lane, who gives a crap about cruising in the far left lane?

Also he might not really be meaning to race you as he could have gone to the lane to the right to do that, wait for you to come up and gas it. Some people just don't like getting passed even when they are only going the speed limit.

geh, ricers. "im so fast because i own a honda/acura, i can beat ANYONE". get a clue buddy, go to the drag strip and race real cars not some little kiddies on the street. this is why they're getting anal about road laws and speeding tickets. christ. let the guy pass you if he's in such a damn rush. cue the intro music to speed racer.

edit: let me ask you this, do you even know if your tires are rated for 110mph? what would have happened if you had blown a tire to shreds at those speeds? take that into consideration before you go that fast again. just because they're "low profile" or "sporty" looking, does not mean they're rated to go fast.

Why do TL owners try to challenge a GTO?
Why do they do this?

I'm driving my wife and a couple friends home from a night on the town and I pull up to a left turn light next to a brand new TL-S, with dealer plates and all. Inside was a yuppie looking dude with a chick in the passenger's seat.

The light turns green and we move through the intersection, turning left. Onto the main road, he was looking over and then started trying to accelerate away. Well, I couldn't allow the Goat's honor to be besmirched. I dipped the pedal in 1st, found 2nd shortly thereafter, and the TL gave up at about 50mph. He didn't approach my rear bumper the rest of the way down the road.

Why do they keep doing this? An anonymous forum user has a TL and already knows to not touch me. WHAT? Did the REAR tires squealing at the top of 1st and the car going sideways from 1st->2nd not give you and indication?

Perfectly safe. What do you think it would do in an automatic if you stepped on it?

I especially like when people say it's abusive and you shouldn't run a car to red line. But if you have an automatic and have a tach, take a look at how high the manufacturer allows the automatic to wind it out, even holding it there as long as possible.

If you've ever driven a caliber with its CVT transmission, that's exactly what it does when you floor it. Basically no power for a second or so while it winds up, then just holds it at redline (HP doesn't drop off before then like in a normal car...) for as long as your foot is on the go pedal.

Not that the caliber goes anywhere fast because of this. I'm just echoing what you said: Auto tranny's would keep the thing pegged if they could. When they can (CVT), they do.

And for the record, no, I don't own the caliber. And no, I wouldn't recommend one to anybody.

Reality Check : They haven't made a TL-S since the '04 changeover. There is an A-Spec, but they're often unbadged, and relatively rare.

As far as the rest of it, the GTO is a nice car, and far faster than even a significantly modified TL (S, A, or otherwise), and if this moron didn't know that, then he probably knows nothing about cars. That said, the TL is a very nice ride, and a bargain compared to the 3-series for what you get. The only real contemporary for it is the G35 Sedan, with a better drive setup, but weaker interior/options/stereo.

Cliffs : GTO is easily modded to a 10-second car. TL is a nice ride that couldn't do 10 seconds unless you bolted some Air Force booster rockets to the ass end of it.

Reality check: Acura offers a TL-S in 2008. Link It has a 286HP 3.5L V6, compared to the standard TL's 258HP 3.2L V6.
 OMG, a muscle car driver knows something about imports

And the GTO isn't that easily modded to a 10s car. Traction is a huge problem with these cars. But I agree with your general statements, despite the inaccuracies 😉

Wow, my bad, I was under the impression that the Type-S had been permanently shelved. Looks like the competition from the newer, faster 3-series and the G35/G37 gave them reason to bring it back.

I've seen a lot of youtube videos of 10-second GTOs, but they're on slicks obviously, and probably won't see too many street-mode, road-tire 10-second GTOs.

Second is horrible quality, but kinda funny, guy takes off in his Cavalier way off-start, then the GTO guy blasts to a 9-second run.

Since you're a lot more experienced with the GTO (closest I ever drove have been Vettes), what else do you have to change on one to drop it to the 10s outside of the motor and tires, is it the rear-end?

I love muscle cars, but due to the fact that I'm now a family man (and unlikely to be able to afford insurance/maintenance/storage/etc on two vehicles), the closest I'll get will be an M5 E39 (or the new one when it drops to $40k level), or perhaps a G35/335i, etc.

Yeah you'll definitely need a stronger diff. Stick's need axle as wells and a monster clutch. Hardened tranny for sure. Motor wise you need a monster build or serious forced induction.

Problem with tires is about the widest you can fit are 275's. Some people have converted to a live axle. Someone right now is doing a mini tub, we'll see how well that works.

Why do TL owners try to challenge a GTO?
Why do they do this?
hah hah, i like that. why do 99% of honda/acura owners that dont own a nsx/s2000 that have no mods besides intake/exhaust challenge anything? don't they realize that they're car is like a 14-16second car or slower? its NOT FAST.

New car syndrome. I've had a onslaught of Nissan Titans and Toyota Tundras challenging me lately, with temp tags and all. Creeping, revving, glaring, tailgating then trying to swerve around me regardless of which lane I'm in, and peeling out at lights and challenging me in a Cobra.

I guess because I have to roll my foot gently through pretty much all of 1st and I'm not accelerating very fast that they gain confidence and keep their foot in it thinking they are pulling away, but thats quickly shot down when I get halfway through second and nail it. By the time I coast through the middle of third they've changed their mind.

The best kill story I saw was a new Titan racing a Ford Super-Duty Diesel. I don't think people realize the silly amount of power you can have with only a few mods in any diesel truck.
The Super Duty was also towing a 65 Mustang on a flatbed trailer. That Titan owner's lower jaw dropped in aghast.

I think they challenge you just to see what your car will do. They know full well they are no competition. They get their kicks when you get on it - that's all.

I had some kids in a mid-90's GrandAm fly up on me on the highway. They pulled alongside and then pulled ahead some. I was game and let it rip - they were cheering as I flew by

I don't think so because after you slow down well ahead they make it their point in life to catch up and ride your ass regardless of what your speed is and flashing their brights and stuff after they fail to merge around you on a 2 into 1.

They look pretty pissed after you've just given them buyers remorse.

I just think it's a new generation of red necks that think their truck is fast because it says "V8" on the side. Like I said, every time it's still got temp tags on it, that means it's "new car syndrome" more than wanting to see what someone elses car can do.

100 HP @ 3000 RPM
1000000000 TQ @ 100 RPM

😉

Most of those you don't even need to pop the hood. Just a chip can manipulate the boost settings (digital waste gate? ECU control of variable turbine?) and give you like a 150 hp/tq boost.
