Well I'm just pointing out you made a straw man argument against fighting by using incidents that occurred because of regular game play. So as long as we are clear that a fight rolling into the crowd != a puck flying into the crowd/glass breaking do to a check, we can move back to talking about fighting itself.

fan safety is the reason the NBA came down hard on the players. you can't have brawls spilling into the stands if you want wealthy old white men to continue paying tens of thousands of dollars for courtside seats all season.

the media bitching level isn't any higher than miami, and in fact is lower than miami because everyone on the court that night got what they deserved (the only person to get away is isiah). if you don't listen to sports radio regularly you might not realize that.

yup, seems you don't appear to read espn or listen to sports radio constantly. the level of media bitching isn't higher than the miami brawl, and in fact is lower because the people involved got what they deserved. don't forget it's only the second weekday/workday for a lot of sports media, so it's not like this has gone on very long.

I also think it has to do with the fact that a lot of the players in the NBA are simply dumb. I mean dumb as in retarded, or simply poorly educated. They get drafted before they even go to college, some of them don't even graduate High School. That makes them more volatile and thug like IMO. I know I may get critisized for speaking my mind, but I think this is the biggest reason people hate the NBA and scrutinize them more as role models. These are down right losers IMO, with absolutely no education - a lot of the so called roll models are down right stupid.

With Football these players are usually quite intelligent, graduated college before getting paid the millions and mature enough to not let it go to their heads as much. Even if they do spit, like TO - he is still a better role model to have then Carmello Anthony - stupid punk kid who can't even drink legally yet - actually I guess he is 21 now but when he entered the league he couldn't even drink.

Please name any current players who did not graduate HS. What % of NFL players got their degrees while still playing CFB? How does being able to drink make you a role model?

You may not get criticized for "speaking your mind" but maybe you should get some facts straight.

That makes no sense at all.

How about Allen Iverson? Have you heard of him?

Of course, in his defense - he didn't finish HS because he went to prison for 4 months after being convicted of assault and battery. Oh wait....

Now granted maybe I didn't clarify and made it sound like they get brought into the NBA before they finish HS and I didn't make myself clear on that. But the fact remains, they get brought into the NBA earlier and earlier, and a lot of times right out of HS.

Iverson went to Georgetown without a HS diploma? Wow, I didn't realize it was that easy. There are very few HS players that make it in the NBA. The vast majority either went to college or played intl ball. Still not clear on your point.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_Iverson

Apparently his mom probably slept with the coach.

After reading more, it seems he hadn't finished his senior year when he went to prison, but that he attended a school that catered to at-risk students or students who already had dropped out of high school. So he probably got his GED before heading off to Georgetown.

My point isn't clear to you, thats fine - I'm sure its clear as day to many others.

I think they should give all the ghetto thugs in the NBA guns, put them in a bullet proof court, to protect the fans and media and let them play!

People should note that NBA players fight like lil b1tches, run in take a shot and get out. Hockey players go toe-to-toe with each other, and even when they're fighting, usually there's still respect between the two players, enough so that it stays a clean fight.

Pretty obvious from this thread that most of you dont know jack about fighting in hockey.

First off, I can't stand the NBA. Haven't liked it since Jordan left, but regardless...

I was watching MSNBC yesterday afternoon and one of the news readers (I believe it was Chris Jansing) was bitching out a guest b/c he didn't see what the big deal was about NBA players fighting on the court.

She responds to Guest 1 by saying they're making all of this money and they're supposed to be role models and kids look up to them

Guest 2 says that's its the environment that these kids grew up. They grew up around violence, they see violence on TV, movies and everywhere so it's not surprising that they act out on the court.

Guest 1 responds with hockey, baseball and football players get into fights, but they are not subjected to the same kind of scrutiny for it. And they definitely don't get the "You're supposed to be a role model" lecture.

At that time, Chris Jansing says that "Well, we're out of time" and goes to commercial.

Now I was watching some different news programs on other networks in the past few days and it seems as though they carry the same attitude that NBA players should be held to some different standard. WTF?

WTF are you smoking? Baseball get huge fines... and thrown outa games... football huge fines and suspended...

Hockey.. well the old addage is "went to a fight and a hockey game broke out..." they are the exception to the rule.. but the NHL has in recent years been frowning heavily on it.
and dishing out ejections and fines..

all sports now frown on fighting as they should...

so I dont know what youre talking about.

WTF are you talking about? I'm not talking about fines.

I'm talking about players in one sport getting constant media flak for fighting while others don't.

Um any time you get a serious altercation at a sporting event you get massive press coverage.. where have you been? under a rock? football.. look at all the crap over that guy that headstomped a guy this year...

baseball every time they get a serious bench clearing brawl its on the news...

hockey.. pssft part of the game never is covered unless someone gets hurt.

its all about demographics.

because basketball's targeted audience is usually troubled individuals...
(poor but athletic african american kids)

while

footballs intended audience are normal americans without violent tendencies...
(rich fat lazy wannabe white kids)

while

hockeys intended audience are non-american (canadien, west asian, east european) who aren't uptight and pussified about sex or violence in daily life

while

people only watch golf and tennis because of teh hot chiks in tight outfits. , that and golfers and tennis people dont fight, or if they fought, chik fights are encouraged.

and finally

No-one really watches baseball anymore, because well... baseball ranks about the same as or even below televised fishing.

But there's a difference. Those events get media coverage, but aren't psycho-analyzed to the point where:

[*]They bring in experts to determine what is going on in the minds of these players
[*]Questioning why someone getting paid so much money isn't a better role-model for kids
[*]How their environment causes such angst and frustration

When sh!t happens in other sports, it gets coverage and they're all like "That silly bastard, you know how he is" or "It's an unfortunate incident."

It seems as though with NBA fights, the mentality of the players is scrutinized on a whole different level.

Well then I'd think this is a question only ESPN can answer, not ATOT?

Fixed

A young man from the ghetto with $5 million is still a young man from the ghetto.

And fighting is not being a member of society? What society are you from?

Kind of OT but the NFL has been calling a **LOT** of personal fouls this year for fighting.

Ive seen 1 or 2 every game, and i had only seen 1 or 2 per season in the past.

Also OT, it shouldve been a huge personal foul against TO when he spit in Hills face.

There are lots of fights in the NBA that don't get any more attention than your average pushing match in any sport. It's when the brawls break out that they get all the media attention. And how is that different than any other sport? Perhaps some of you recall the Miami/FIU brawl? Yeah... lots of media attention, long suspensions, people losing jobs, etc...
