Mostly due to political stability during critical periods in history. All regions of the world went through cycles of centralization and decentralization, and at various times might be considered 'more powerful' than the other. You've heard about all of the Arab contributions to science or how the Chinese invented everything first. These reflect times when Europe was in the dark ages and these areas were under strong, centralized governments that provided long term stability.

It just so happens that Europe was on one end of the cycle, and China and Arab nations on the other, during this time. So Europe was able to strongarm the Ottomans, the Chinese, everyone else, strengthening themselves even more and thus being able to hold an even firmer grip on these other regions.

I'd say Europe, Russia, China, and the Arabs all had an equal shot at what ended up going mostly to Britain and France.

Most interesting theory I heard? Glass. Due to asian culture's mastery of porcelain, there was no need for them to develop and perfect glass. Europe in contrast, mastered glass making. Glass was key in many European scientific developments due to its unique properties, such as being generally chemically nonreactive, transparent, etc. etc. Therefore, it allowed the Europeans both catch up and exceed Asian technology, and with that lead, conquer the world.

I've got it, and read it. Been sitting on my desk for a couple of years now. The basic case being that Europeans were more willing to sail and explore the world than other cultures. They encountered and traded with more cultures and were able to spread their influence over a much wider area.

China for example had been a cultural superpower during the Mongolian era. Chinese technological advancement only seemed to drop off when strict limits were put on sailing ships by their emperor.
