Because he stirs real emotion in young people - here is a leader, a man who can get up in front of a crowd and make them cry. I'd vote for him.

yeah, considering our education in america, not surprising how easily youth responds to simple propaganda. kids aren't taught to think critically, just respond. that, and the bush effect.

Product of the public education system controlled by corrupted unions and taught by incompetent teachers.

damn straight.
Fuck ya, man. Let's go bomb something.

what are you, fucking leo dicaprio?

mccain is a realist, obama is an idealist. why do you think iran is jumping for joy because obama won? he is a friend, mccain isn't.

if the iraq war has you phased, just wait for the future.

In part, McCain lost because people like you support him.

McCain lost because people like you support Obama.

If attacking me satisfies your intellect, so be it. Just glad to know that's how the Obama camp is trained.
Just a guess, but are you in your mid teens?

And, please don't consider this an attack. I just need to know where to position my expectations in regards to your posts.

Haha, I didn't see your post. I guessed 15 with a couple of delusionals for parents and maybe a preacher somewhere.

Obama won because of two major reasons:

1.) People view him as stronger on economy.
2.) People are tired of President Bush and are not happy with how things have gone in the past 8 years.

For #1, the economic advantage; plain and simple, Obama is viewed as the champion of the working class on the economy, with McCain painted as a champion of corporate America and the wealthy. I don't like Obama's proposals one bit, but there is no doubt that his plan will benefit a larger number of people in a greater way than McCain's would; whether it is the right thing to do and whether or not his proposals will actually benefit the economy is another story and remains to be seen.

McCain / Republicans are stronger on social issues (abortion, gay marriage, etc) and foreign policy. This election, those issues faded out of the spotlight and basically we heard about economy, economy, economy.

For #2, there isn't much to say. People blame the country's current problems, especially the economy, on the party that has been in firm power 6/8 of the last years, and Bush. McCain was painted as being the same as Bush; not true, but that is what people believe. Overall, people were just in a mood for "change" this election; whether that will come will Obama remains to be seen of course, but people wanted a new face in Washington and they voted accordingly.

Out of curiosity, what state do you live in and what is your highest level of education?

I believe the first impact in the conscious evolution of many youth is a 2 x 4.

And, to varying degrees, this treatment needs to be repeated again and again.

Obama won because he was judged by the content of his character, NOT the color of his skin lol..

He came out of CHICAGO, this might be the most corrupt administration since Nixon....

It's a combination of everything. I'm sure if McCain had the history of Obama, he would have been slaughtered. Unfortunately, our "tolerance" clouds our judgment. We're too easily swayed by silly speeches and simple-minded attack campaigns.

But McCain lost.

hahahahahahaaaaa...how true!!

As many choices as you picked, I picked 'other' because I think the answer was a broad rejection of the Republican policies. "Unpopularity of Bush' is too narrow, as the rejection of Republicans in Congress in both 2006 and 2008 shows. I also don't give the public credit for the choice 'basic on actual policy differences', but rather a more general dissatisfaction with the whole corrupt Republican approach and broadly bad policies. There's yet more to it, like an especially able politician in Obama, and the timing of the economic collapse.

If I did choose just one factor as the most important specific thing, I think the economic crash just before the election sealed the deal for Obama.

I'd like to think Palin was a reason for people to vote for Obama too, but sadly ~48% of Americans thought having Palin close to the presidency was a good idea.

This last fact scientifically proves our democracy is hugely troubled, like seeing your passenger jet is pilotless, being flown by remote control by a kid on his Wii.

Obama's character was shown when he chose to serve the community in low paying political work after being the editor of the Harvard Law Review.

Chicago's admittedly corrupt culture is not any proof of corruption of Obama. Think of how different than California's blue state culture its presidents are - Nixon and Reagan.

It was the general incompetency of this Bush administration compounded for 6 of its 8 years, waaaaay more than a broad rejection of Republican policies IMO. They spent like drunken sailors...i.e. like Democrats of yesteryear, which p!ssed a lot of small govt conservatives like me off. They embarrassed us with Katrina, tried to ram an open borders bill down our throat in 2007, and stuck their nose in where it didn't belong in the Terry Schiavo case (but that was minor next to the other stuff).

And even if all that wasn't enough to convince people it was time to take a chance on something different, the economic meltdown in Sept/Oct sealed the deal.

Obama won because he was not judged by the media & the people.

Hell, McCain was not judged by the people either. I firmly believe we could have thrown out all the debates, not had them, and it wouldn't have made a difference in the election. Fox News & MSNBC could have both been shut off during the whole election cycle and it wouldn't have made a difference.

Carter lost in 1980 because he was boring / Reagon was more interesting
Mondale lost in 1984 because he was boring / Reagon was more interesting
Dukakis lost in 1988 because he was boring / Bush was more interesting
Bush lost in 1992 because he was not as interesting as Clinton
Dole lost in 1996 because he was boring
Gore lost in 2000 because he was boring
Kerry lost in 2004 because he was boring
McCain lost in 2008 because he was boring

Yeah, I don't have much faith in presidential elections. :p I honestly don't think Bush was *that* much a factor in this election, Obama was just that more interesting of a person.

Why did you bump this thread? If you wanted to make bs allegations about his future administration, save it for winnar111's thread.

He was chosen b/c he promised to continue 'borrow and spend' and still came across as having a higher probability of spending this stolen money on average person vs on Aeron office chairs for the military and $200 toilet seats. Before the only party completely committed to fiscal irresponsibility was Republicans but their caveat is most of the money they would never see. It was still worth it to them apparently, as opposed to taxes; now it isn't.

Let's try to keep the old thread bumping to a minimum unless there is something new on the topic worth sharing and bringing it up again. Alistar7, if you want to start a new thread about Chicago politics, feel free...but I don't think any comments so far warranted a month old thread bump.
