I had to vote Race.

I quote USAToday:
Most significantly, it ended by sending the first African American in history to the White House. Obama's election as president, 143 years after the United States abolished slavery, fueled a jump in black participation and stood as a transformational moment in the nation's racial history.

Obama not only won 95% of black voters but also 43% of whites ? a bit better than John Kerry, a white Democrat, did among white voters in the 2004 presidential election. In surveys at polling places, nine of 10 voters said the race of the candidates wasn't important in their decision of whom to support.

Bush's unpopularity coupled with increased african american turn-out.

any democrat would have won this election, but I'm not sure anyone but Obama would have done it so decisively.

it would take a major upheaval to create a legitimate third party in our lifetime beyond random token seats in oddball states that still caucus at the big boys table.

A combination of two key issues:

1) The current economy. (Despite the fact that I believe the crisis to be exaggerated, things are still objectively bad enough to warrant a desire to change controlling parties.)
2) Inability of the Republican party to field an intellectual candidate due to their irrational desire to continue clinging to the far right.

It's hard to give a "primary" reason. In the end, however, the economony making a major shitfest couldn't have been more well timed, and I think that's why Obama killed McCain in the electoral vote, and had a fair lead in the popular vote.

Who would have thought four years ago that only 1 vote of 116 would have said the election boiled down to the war.

If Bush was even slightly popular, Obama wouldn't have won. Obama just came at the right time, period. People like to pass off Obama as this champion of peace and hope, but if McCain had the history of Obama he'd be slaughtered.

Imagine the press - McCain attending a white supremacist church, befriending a crazy fundamentalist who baptized his kids, arranged his marriage, and was his close friend and mentor for 20 years. Obama got lucky.

Because he stirs real emotion in young people - here is a leader, a man who can get up in front of a crowd and make them cry. I'd vote for him.

yeah, considering our education in america, not surprising how easily youth responds to simple propaganda. kids aren't taught to think critically, just respond. that, and the bush effect.

I would like to point out that this education system produced YOU and all the other wingnuts on P&N so I doubt there was some Obama-based consipiricy built into it. Can you not find a shred of optimism? He is clearly a leader and he is clearly intelligent - can you not give him that?

2 factors:

1) the timing of the economic crash

2) Obama's campaign was well-financed, and well-run on both a strategic and tactical level. McCain's campaign floundered on both of those levels.

I saw this on CNN yesterday:

Start of October, McCain had 0 (ZERO) ground offices in Ohio.
Obama had 39 ground offices.

The Republicans can't count on the white conservative vote anymore - shifting demographics, more young people voting, hispanics/blacks moving left, etc.

I looked at this and wondered why you were saying this and then realized it's what this thread is about...

If attacking me satisfies your intellect, so be it. Just glad to know that's how the Obama camp is trained.

Just a guess, but are you in your mid teens?

And, please don't consider this an attack. I just need to know where to position my expectations in regards to your posts.

Funny you should mention that since that seems to be the plan of the rightwing fundies for their kids. You know, the Republican base.

I am of the opinion that you are rather young. I can find no other explanation for the brash egotistical brain dead glarp you regurgitate with with such infinite authority and reckless absence of any internal reflection or organic shame. You are a robo-platitude-talking-points-spewing drone, an authoritative recorded tape, a mouth organ fifing punch tape of stupidity. You are a shell shocked drunken loon swinging at shadows of you own fat head. You are as far from a realist as any idealistic idiot could ever be. You are completely inane and your words have the authority of turds and a puss spouting fountain of a lanced boil. I can conclude only that you're an immature and braggart egotistical child.

Now that we have that out of the way, yes, Obama was elected by people like me, proud intelligent people, brave people, not sniveling cowards afraid of their shadow, not pimples afraid the Soviet Union is going to march up their pants and carve their dick off smaller than it already is, not cowering cur trained to run their tails up their asses at the sight of a stick.
