Why did Mother Nature create dinosaurs?

Just look at Ostriches! Quite a few giant flightless birds existed even recently but have went extinct. The Moa family, with the Giant Moa (larger than the Ostrich), and a few similar birds.

The Ostrich just screams "dinosaur" everywhere, except for it's lack of teeth. But millions of years can change little things like that.
It's powerful legs and the way the feet and legs look, are almost creepy how much they seem like living fossils.
