I like some Green Day songs, but it took me a while to not hate them because of their lead singer (his voice bothered me). To me it sounds like people took American Idiot and just assumed it was anti-American (kinda like the opposite for Born in the USA). More or less it just sounds like they're saying American politics is shit, which most people would agree with I think. I don't really like overtly political music all that much though so I'm not a huge fan of the album. Then there's Boulevard of Broken Dreams which I couldn't believe was usurped as the most overplayed song of all time so quickly (Lips of an Angel...), but eh whatever.

One thing I will say though is the limp wristed attempt at political music this day and age is pretty sad. Granted, its tough to compete with the maelstrom that was the 60s, and maybe it takes time for the politics involved to fade into history, but what passes for activism in music these days is pathetic. I suppose it might be the lack of subtlety, or the complete disregard for making a solid song first and then trying to have it make a statement. It probably doesn't help that I have trouble feeling these musicians can relate to what they're singing about. Yeah, times must be so terrible in your mansion on the beach. No doubt you see the struggles of the masses while you're out clubbing.

they do it cause its hip, plain and simple. They made more money off that last heaping shit of an album/tour than they had for the decades before.

They went from an influential punk band to a red tie-black shirt, eye-liner wearing d-bags.

In a nutshell, Green Day sucks ass.

Wow, I just knew that that Wake Me When I Puke in my Mouth song really sucked and there must have been a deep reason for recording something so bad when they are capable of better. I had no idea they really did hate America.

But the main point of my OP is that the Foxboro Hottubs album is quite good and worth a listen.

Just so you you guys know this isnt the first time they have done this. They did it before American Idiot too. It was a band called "The Network". It seems like they just need to get back into the studio and play as a group before they release a new album now. But who gives a shit.

Also, American Idiot was pretty much a big fat F You to the Bush admin and had a lot of the lead singers political view in it. I dont give a shit as to weather you, me, or anyone else liked it. Bands need to have more of a stance on something other than their current relationship status, and how sad they are... or are not. Politics were DEEPLY infused into the musical cultural back in the 60's and 70's and there is music from that time that is still MUCH more influential than anything being released today.

So, I dont give two craps about what anyone thinks about the music, good for anyone willing to standup for something unpopular.

Wait, hold the phone, so what you're saying is that rock music may have lyrics that express and dissident message?
This is ground breaking stuff. I bet it's never been done before.

Now only if they created a look for the followers of this type of music. Like long hair, wildly colored shirts, head bands and sandals.
Then they could organize a bunch of other similar musicians to throw a big music festival somewhere in the country!
You're totally on to something man! Imagine if we did this while smoking some joints, woah, I think I blew my mind.

Even if they don't know what the fuck they are talking about and just doing it to be "cool"?

I'm sorry, but if I want to learn the latest political news, my first choice isn't stupid ass greenday.

I actually find it scary that bands/actors/athletes can have such a large impact on the way dumb, young people think. Don't vote or backup anything based off what some stupid band sings about.

The conclusion I have reached is that Green Day hated America for awhile and recorded Wake Me as a way of hurting us. Now they seem to have gotten over it.

Thoughts?

Green Day hates you, and the fact that you think you are America.

You think anyone's politics are really swayed because a couple of musicians had a political thought and wrote a song about it? They're artists. Commenting on society is what artists are supposed to do. Just because you don't agree with their message doesn't mean that anyone with a position to speak to a lot of people should shut up because they're not "experts." Get off your high horse.

I guess the basics of what I am saying is that I dont think bands have much of an opinion anymore reguardless of what it is. I don't care if it's Eminem, Green Day, the Dixies Chicks, or Tom Petty.

I mean, Metallica pissed more people off that I can count by telling them to get bent and not steal their music. Doesn't mean they sing about stuff. But really, if you dont like, pay it no mind. There are MANY MANY other things to do than get pissed about someone elses opinion. Especially when they are allowed to it, reguardless of what we think.

I don't think that they are trying to do it to be "cool". I think they are a bunch of pseudo hippies who came from the SF area, and therefor have the pretty liberal views that come from that part of the world. And I don't think they were trying to tell me how to think, I believe they were expressing their views.

And that last part of your statement is about the only thing we seem to agree on here.

Yes, I do feel that way, hence the reason I replied to the thread. There are a vast number of highly stupid people in this country that idolize people that have no reason being idolized.

And I'll clarify my statement: I don't care what your lyrics are, but when you go on interviews and tv in general, keep your retarded conspiracy theories in your own crazy head. Its one thing to write a catchy pop single about how America is the worst country evar omg....but its another thing to go on a campaign about shit you don't even understand.

You can hate Bush or whoever all you want, but your reasoning shouldn't be "I hate Bush cause of that one cool greenday song"

Another thing I despise is hypocritcal 'stars' that will gladly take millions for doing things that they are supposedly "against". Greenday hates America and Bush, but gladly took hundreds of millions touring/selling here. System of a Down hates America, just not when they're making a shit load of money off it. George Clooney is anti-gun, but has made millions portraying a soldier/hitman/criminal with guns-a-blazing.

And just for a laugh, HERE is a link to something that relates to what i just rambled on about.

bah, it's the same people that watch MTV news with that Kurt Loader ahole. He may not be on now, I haven't watched MTV in eons. But the brash, unapologetic, ways of shoveling a crapload of biased nonsense was appalling. And it never pissed anyone off, because that is what they expected.
Blind Bush hate, blind America hate. Nobody knows why they hate. Just put on your Che shirt to fit in.

Do you like Linkin Park's album Minute's to Midnight? Guess what that's about? The Doomsday clock, and anti-Bush post 9/11 and Katrina. Take a listen to "Hands Held High" and see what ya think.

Something else to think about. A lot of musicians are anti-Bush. It's nothing new.

Had Metallica made any decent music after the Black album they might have had a case.
Instead they turned into a bunch of whiny bitches with Lars in the lead as head douchebag.

So, if they took no money and were poor you would respect their message? Give me a fucking break, you're just making up stupid reasons to hate them and silence their message because you don't agree with it. Nothing more.

It's a free country...or at least it used to be. They can say whatever they want. Obviously some people agree with the message or they wouldn't have sold any albums.
