why can't you delete your facebook page?

I was at a friends and they wanted to cancel their FB account. At first it wouldn't let them without them filling out a damn questionnaire telling them why they wanted the account deleted. Then all it did was disable the shit and told them if they ever log back in it will re-activate it and her page will be totally intact as it was before. Since it's not actually deleted does that mean they'll still do bullshit with her personal information she didn't give them permission to? Fucking ridiculous site.

She DID give them permission to do whatever the hell they want with her information.

Facebook is the spawn of the Devil!

didn't you see the facebook South Park episode.... that's what happens.

anyhoo... AFAIK the account can only be "deactivated", not deleted. i wonder if you got in touch with someone @ facebook if you could have it deleted outright? do they own the images forever?

kind of a scary site for sure. i've been thinking of saying my account was hacked, just to deactivate it. :ninja:

I deleted mine a few weeks ago. It takes a week or so, but it works.

HOW TO DELETE (long version)

Go here (working link above):
http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=delete_account

Click "Submit" and follow the instructions.

Your account will be deactivated for two weeks, and if you DO NOT LOG IN during that period, your account is permanently deleted. I REPEAT: don't panic if your profile isn't deleted right away! You must NOT try to log in to your account for at least two weeks, as it will cancel the deletion request. If you want out - stay out, mmmkay? ;)

This method is official and should be complete, i.e. no need to delete individual photos, comments, messages or items from your profile or anywhere else on Facebook! If you have any concerns whether your stuff is actually deleted (as opposed to being kept somewhere in the deep dungeons of Facbook's HQ) your best bet is to ask them using email: info@facebook.com.

Yep, deactivated only, not deleted. (I think)

So be careful what you put on there if you don't want it traced back.

I was actually joking about playing Mafia Wars. That game is for losers. It's all about Farmville :awe:!

Okay...I'm kidding again. I don't have any of those silly applications.

By clicking Sign Up, you are indicating that you have read and agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.

If she clicked "Sign Up", she did give them permission. Fucking n00bs.

Once you've taken the Red Pill, there's no going back.

I've heard, that if you use an LCD Monitor when signing up for FB, a high concentrated beam of light etches "666" on your forehead. Which is why I still use a CRT monitor and a Tinfoil headband.

Ok but if you tell them you want your account deleted it should be deleted not suspended, I can't think of another site that has this bullshit policy. Thanks to KT for pointing out you can actually delete it, but they definitely make it difficult enough to where the typical person will never figure out how. I wouldn't call anyone a noob for thinking when they want their account deleted that all their personal info gets deleted too. And I somehow doubt the TOS tells you that you're unable to delete the account unless you search deep as fuck into the site. The link KT posted definitely doesn't come up when you go into your account settings, all you can do there is deactivate it.

What's with all the Facebook hate lately? I'm hoping that it's not about the new privacy settings... since everyone here should be smart enough to know that anything that you post on a social network will eventually become public anyway. Don't believe me? Try Googling your AT forums user name.

I've more or less stopped using FB for communicating with family & friends - occasionally share pictures, that's about it. I've turned toward using facebook for entertainment though. Whenever someone posts a link to "get 100,000 experience points now before they fix this bug. Click here" - I up the ante & make MY link even more irresistable when I comment on their link. Of course, I link them to that pop-up window Rick Roll that pretty much crashes your browser. Passive aggressive entertainment. :)

Of course just because you deleted it there is no proof they actually removed the data from their servers. All your comments, photo's, etc are now in facebook's hands with you still having no control over it.

I deleted mine a few weeks ago. I wanted to use the http://suicidemachine.org/ but it was always busy.
