Why can't Windows REALLY remember folder view settings?

This has been an annoyance with every version of Windows I've used at home - 98, 2000 and XP. I have lots of subfolders with dozens of hi-res scans I've taken from 35mm film, broken down into category and subcategory. I'm gradually working my way through them all to prepare them for printing, so it's handy to keep them all on 'thumbnail' view so I can easily see what is contained within the file.

The thumbnail view setting will stay for a while, then go back to 'list, for no apparent reason. It doesn't matter that 'Remember each folder's view setting' is enabled or disabled or that I haven't touched the folder for a few days, bam, it reverts back to List again. Not all subfolders change at the same time and I can see no pattern to what is happening.

Is there a way of forcing Windows to REALLY, REALLY, REALLY remember the view setting? It seems the most basic of ideas and yet one which has never been implemented properly.

I wish I had an answer for you because this also really annoys me. I have dozens of sub-folders in my "My Documents" folder and like to keep it on "list" view so it's easier to find things however ever so often (maybe once a week) it changes back to the default "tile" view, once more it turns off the status bar (which I like to have on).

If anyone does know how to change this behavior I would also like to know.

..and then of course there's the other annoyance whereby view settings for 'My Computer' and 'Windows Explorer' are separate to each other which just adds to the confusion when they decide to revert back to their defaults again.

The answer is that Explorer only remembers the 200 most recently opened folders. Is that consistent with your experience?

And no, there's no way around it. I don't know why they did it that way, but dem's da rulz.

Go to Appearance, Explorer, Settings, Folder Setting Cache Size.

Ummm.... unless my eyesight has just taken a turn for the worse, this option is not there. I just downloaded and installed it so I presume I've got the latest version.

Even after installing the latest X-Setup you won't have all of the plug-ins. On the Welcome to Xteq Systems X-Setup dialog you need to click on the X-Update for X-Setup - Automatic Updates link. That will open a dialog for getting all of the plug-ins. That may fix your problem with not finding the option to which theAnimal alluded.

Does anybody know what the regedit for this is? I would like to change this setting on a bunch of computer and would rather not install this software.

I highlighted the item in X-Setup and found the following with edit

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU Size
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU Size

Hope that helps.

On the Welcome to Xteq Systems X-Setup dialog you need to click on the X-Update for X-Setup - Automatic Updates link.

I downloaded just about every plug-in available and the dang thing still doesn't appear as an option. Oh well, the reg hack will have to do :)

GGGrrreat!!! One thousand it is! I've been bugged forever by this and just deleted the keys BagsMru and Bags. Maybe this will help fix this longer.

Thanks!

Under explore view the directory files as _____ Icons, and to set the view the way you want: Tools > Folder options > View > Like Current Folder

All directory will be view as _____ Icons.

As for why some directory files view as thumnails & other is not is because you haven't set the global view setting as mentioned above.

Hmm... just tried to do this regedit but that BagMRU is a key. So what kind of value and what is the name of the value?

Under Shell and ShellNoRoam you need to create a new REG_DWORD called BagMRU Size with value of what size you want.
