In my completely non-professional opinion, I think there's got to be, for some people, some sort of addictive component to the feeding process. It's bigger than having no willpower; it'd be more akin to explaining the process of why some people get addicted to uppers, some opiates, some booze, some nothing at all.
It's my completely non-professional understanding that there is also a physiological process at work, and it's not just emotional. Something about insulin spikes or sugar crashes or whatever that makes it more likely for you to overeat if you've just overeaten, even if you're not hungry. Why you can finish like 8 cookies and then in 30 minutes be looking for a new meal. I've read it before but I don't know what the process is. Maybe some of our more educated members can shed some light on it.
