Yes, but it is an old version and I couldn't log into Aim or Yahoo, so I was trying to either update or reinstall, no go on either.

What version of suse are you using? I had no problem connecting to aim with my version of kopete.

I just started with Knoppix about a week or two ago and I've probably been using it more than Windows now that I have it installed (I've had similar experiences as you in the past, however, with numerous other distros including SuSE, RedHat, Slackware, Lindows, and maybe another one or two). There are still hardware issues that I need to work out, namely getting my Palm to HotSync and getting my printer to work, but for everything else it is perfect. I highly recommend trying it out, especially because installation is a piece of cake and it uses APT meaning really easy software installation and upgrading.

I think I finally grasped the operation of Linux... on my toaster. It was tough and took months of practice, but now I can just taste the toasty penguin!

Gentoo is hard to set up initially, but once it's installed it's very simple to keep up to date. You don't have to worry about dependencies at all.

"Why can't I grasp Linux?"

i dont know, tell me. my mind reading skills are no good these days.

what exactly are you having difficulty with? learning linux/unix is like learning how to speak another language. you already know something that will definately help you out in learning a new language, and that is english. unix and linux run on the same computer parts that run your windoze OS. just practice and learn the enviroment.
i remember using windoze for the first time. i had no clue what i was doing. i had no idea what could be done with a computer. after messing around with it for a while i figured it out. just like there are a lot of windoze users out there that dont know squat about computers and windows, there are a lot of people out there that know windows but nothing else.
we dont want you in the club any ways.. girls only like guys with skillz! gosh! like computer hacking skills, nunchuck skills. Skills!

I've tried almost every distro over the last few weeks and have come to the conclusion that it simply sux. All it did was give me more respect for XP.

I like how people say something sux when they just can't figure something out.

See you are confused. I had no problem figuring anything out.

What's to get? If I was broke and didn't have XP pro CDs laying around it might be an option. It may be better for corporate enviroments but it sux for desktops.

It's a whole different philosophy.

That one day it will topple the MS giant and there will be free software for the masses. If someone was willing to give you a piece of sh!t car but you had the money to buy a decent one what would you do?

That little thing you are talking about is a media driven monster. It has nothing to do with the philosophy of *nix systems. In fact, it really has little to do with free/open source software. It's just something someone thought up one day and the media has blown out of proportion. Secret is, we don't care. ;)

gentoo or debian. both WILL make you learn linux, and you don't have to worry so much about dependencies.

I tried out sarge a little while ago and it wasn't all that great, so I'm going to have to recommend gentoo here. If your cpu is fast enough, then compiling your system should take < 1 day. A lot less than that if you just use the already made binaries available for things like openoffice, gnome and such.

Sorry I wasn't enlightened by my experience. Maybe if I had the desire to contribute to the community I would have been but I am simply a user. I'm actually quite frustrated in some of the core philosophies like "make each program do one thing well".

Then you just don't get it. ;)

Nothing wrong with not liking it. Anyone that tells you different has convinced themselves of a lie.

1 Get Debian. Install the least you can form the disc, using aptget for the rest.
1 Optionally, get Knoppix, a debian-based desktop distro that's very good. Or others, but Knoppix typically works well.
2 Bang head against wall.
3 Repeat step 2 several times for each project.

IMO you should use Slackware
Mandrake is a PITA. w/ debian distros, I can do most anything, though I'm still n00bish enough to need to be googling all the time for anything :)

I don't know a non-developer admin that doesn't use google constantly.
