Anyone with a mind today interested in getting paid would do accounting > MBA > Wall Street .... Math, science and medicine are not going to be profitable.

disagree. science (technology) is profitable and will continue to be as long as we have computers.
i work in the field and the pay is great and have no fear of being laid off because i will find something within a few weeks or months.

Heck no!

Unless you mean mindless data entry jobs. Any kind of design work is all about America.

you are joking, right? i have to believe that, as a percentage of population, there are as many smart people in all countries... the difference is availability of education, and that grows every day... the miracle of compounding does its job from there...

study hard my babies... the world is getting smaller every day...

It depends on the education. Learning to memorize facts a la Asian schools won't help you design new algorithms or electronics devices.

You know that there are a shitload of people innovating in China right? You look at innovative research papers, they are all foreign names. The jobs are gone gone gone. We lost out when we decided to pay the janitor instead of the scientist.

You can innovate anywhere. You just have to do it! That's why this country's going to crap - everyone's fat and lazy from excess prosperity.

Actually engineering and everything else follows production in the long haul. People laughed at ZEBO 10 years ago when I said US firms will move their white collar to their blue collar factories and it's happening right now. Also what will follow is finance, insurance, and any other parasitic function. Our banks would be insolvent (actually still are M2M) if not for welfare.

A) His costs for buying insurance are absurdly high and don't bear any relation to my real life experience.

b) He blissfully ignores the consequences of a major (or even semi-major) medical event when he is uninsured-he'll be bankrupt and have to pay the fine for not being uninsured-and while I haven't examined the applicable new statutory provisions, I'll bet that fine is not dischargeable in bankruptcy.

Heavy on partisanship posturing, very short on real world facts or rational analysis.
Did you miss the part where you can sign up for insurance and they can't deny you coverage??

That means that as long as you don't have a major heart attack or a stroke etc etc you will be able to sign up for insurance the second you notice something strange.

You go to the doctor, paying out of your own pocket, and he tells you that you have cancer. The first thing you do is get insurance etc etc.

I can just see it now... Sales reps for insurance companies taking their own brochures out of hospitals and planting brochures for their competitors. It's quite hilarious in a tragic "reality meets Catch-22" sort of way.

I'm going into mental health counseling. Sure, it doesn't really pay much overall, but just reading posts around here makes me happy about all the potential clients!
😀

So you're advocating committing insurance fraud?

It is not insurance fraud, it is the law of the land.

In fact you can call the insurance company and tell them "Hey I just found I have cancer and need $50k in chemo right away so I need to sign up for health insurance." and they can't do a thing about it!!!

Medicare for all and lose all our jobs and doctors to India and China.

They don't need to go to China or India. Rather just out of the inner city and into a rich suburb, especially one where public transportation doesn't run from poor urban centers. Couple that with no longer accepting Medicare patients, and you have a "gated community" hospital that is now profitable. Any city hospital left will be complete shit, similar to inner city schools now. Democrats will get their "free" healthcare, and it will completely and utterly suck.

At a curiosity, has anyone read what it considered a pre-existing condition (ie: breaking your arm when you fall down the stairs is not what I would think of as a pre-existing condition) or are you all just pulling stuff out your ass?

From Section 1101 in HR3590:
(For pre-existing conditions and obtaining insurance)
(d) ELIGIBLE INDIVIDUAL.—An individual shall be deemed to be an eligible individual for purposes of this section if such individual—
(1) is a citizen or national of the United States or is lawfully present in the United States (as determined in accordance with section 1411);
(2) has not been covered under creditable coverage (as defined in section 2701(c)(1) of the Public Health Service Act as in effect on the date of enactment of this Act) during the 6-month period prior to the date on which such individual is applying for coverage through the high risk pool; and
(3) has a pre-existing condition, as determined in a manner consistent with guidance issued by the Secretary.

So if the Secretary says falling down the stairs and then trying to buy health insurance doesn't qualify as a pre-existing condition, it looks like you'll be screwing yourself.

Ever worked in NY or NYC? When I was unemployed for most of 2008 and my severance nearly ended, I got the Cobra application form...$2200 per month!! for a family plan, or $26,400 per year...of which I was paying ~ $435 per month for. Which means my former employer was picking up the balance of that tab. So yes, health plans can cost a SHIT load more depending on where you are in the country.

Luckily for me I got a new job just before I had to write that first check...but these fines in this bill are a JOKE to someone like me and where I work. You can bet your ass people all over NYC are trying to figure out how to arbitrage this, given the math I just pointed out.

I agree with Zebo...this fall I bet we see a 30%+ premium increase at November open enrollment, followed by a similar increase in 2011. Insurance companies will price this in way ahead of time plus a little extra cushion just to be sure. The costs and numbers in NYC metro area are staggering and the fines aren't nearly high enough to discourage HC arbitrage here.

Good luck to you if you have a real emergency without insurance.

You'll be covered. You may have to pay a higher premium, but you'll be covered. No need to worry about not being covered. Health care is now a right, and everyone will be covered.

If an illegal alien who gets hit by a car would be covered, then why wouldn't a taxpaying citizen?

Even if you don't buy insurance, you've been paying the fine, so you have been contributing. So why wouldn't you be covered if you had an accident?

Can't believe the bill is going to cover illegals, but not tax paying, insurance fine paying, citizens.

If it's at work, it'll be workmens comp. In a car, it'll be the car insurance. So those are already covered.

Contributing how much? To what? Here's a clue: the money isn't going to the insurance company that's gong to be forced to pick up your tab, and it's an amount that is totally unrelated to the difference between your cost to the company and the premiums you will be assessed.

This kind of fairy tale moralistic economics is very telling. "Well some money went to somebody somewhere so that entitles me to collect a huge amount of benefits from someone else, whose financial situation is totally unrelated to the other money I paid." Well I don't know about you but that sounds like pure evil to me. It's slightly worse than raping and pillaging. At least a marauding pirate accepts and faces his own immorality. When using the state to rape and plunder a collectivist can maintain a pretense of charity - at least to the willfully ignorant.

And anything else, go to the emergency room where you don't need insurance to get treated anyway, now or future.
