Probably only had a torchon or something; uninitiated should probably start with a pan-seared piece. A little easier to get into that way in my opinion.
Foie Gras is delicious. However, if you're looking for something that keeps forever, is incredibly tasty, and far cheaper, that you can eat on bread, by itself, etc - look into making some pork rillettes. I'm not suggesting that will ever replace the meat-buttery flavor of foie gras, but you can make some rillettes and keep them in the back of the fridge for damn near 6 months if they manage to not get eaten first.
