I have a friend who is really offened by bad words. I dont get it. I can understand being offened by bad intentions, but when Im joking around w/ close friends and Im like "you're an a$$" I obviously dont mean it and it is a term of endearment if anything. But just the same the other person will get offened. Isnt that a little silly?

It might be silly that they get offended, but if he's your friend and he gets offended by it, isn't he due a little consideration? Especially since you're better off not getting into the habit of cussing anyway. :)

Yeah, I suck at spelling...that's why I'm an engineering major and not something else that might require spelling :D

would you call your mother an a$$? if not, why not?

would you look at porn with your mother? if not, why not?

no way, that's nasty. i do know, however, that my parents watch porn together.

i don't think that's the same thing. i'm just trying to get the op to understand how his friend thinks. i curse in front of my parents all the time. of course, i'm 32 years old.

Tell your friend to stop giving others so much power over him. Nobody can offend you. You choose to be offended. You can also choose to not be offended.

When my son complains that someone called him a name, for example, "stupid", I ask him if he *is* stupid. No? Well, when he calls you stupid, does that mean you will become stupid? No? Well, then who is hurt by it? The person doing the name calling, because they have done something to damage their own reputation by being mean. If someone calls him a name, and he starts reacting to it, he's given over his power over his emotions to someone else, and is like a trick dog jumping through hoops for that person.

yea... but my point is that the relationship between a mother and son is different than that of two friends

Think about it.. "bad words". Words are just characters put together to form written representation of sounds, which are themselves just vibrations in the air (or some other medium). Any moral value we attribute to any particular sound or combination of sounds is wholly arbitrary.

This discussion reminds me of a religion thread here where someone says "G-d" and "L-rd", because he feels it's somehow offensive to spell the whole thing out. That person was rightfully flamed for this behavior, but perhaps we should take it another step further along. If we say it's the intent behind the "bad word" that's what is really offensive, then why are words considered bad, but meanings are not? Why is it acceptable to say "G-d" but not "God"? Isn't the intent and meaning identical? For that matter, why are "sh!t" and "fvck" acceptable? Aren't their meanings perfectly clear, and aren't they just as offensive as the words they're designed to replace?

Come to think of it, why are these meanings offensive? Is "sh!t" somehow more offensive than "feces"?

ah yes, i agree with you there.

but should the op make a small effort to help his friend out or should the friend be asked to learn to be desensitized to profanity.

i guess my point is if my friend told me that something offended him i would avoid saying or doing said thing. i might ask him to defend his position but i still can't help what offends him.
