That STILL didn't answer my question. Yes there are some extreme Atheists who try to tear religion down but the OP's original question was generalized across ALL Atheists and since I haven't seen, in general, ALL Atheists tearing at religion I asked for specifics....
Maybe the problem is that I lump Atheists and Agnostics into the same bucket....shrug
All would be wrong. The majority really don't care. If the context is this and other forums, then there is merit to the sentiment. Outside of the dedicated neffing threads you'll find that religion threads dominate in length.
Note that a great many responses are like the one I just sarcastically quoted. They occasionally discern between different viewpoints within Christianity, but usually there isn't a distinction. Well in that context "blacks are thieves" is equally accurate since the statistics show that proportionately true. If I were to make that statement in earnest I would be called a racist. The argument made against that generalization is that blacks don't choose to be black, but that's nonsense because we're talking about an activity, namely crime. Statistically they choose to become criminals like Christians choose to be stupid.
Fortunately most people aren't bigoted to the point where they swallow the "Black = criminal" statement at face value. It's far more complicated than that. Many of these same people however are glad to do precisely that with religion. Christians are as diverse as blacks.
The problem lies with people like those at the Creation Museum where there is a carefully scripted vision of reality which has kids playing with dinosaurs. From what we can know that makes no sense. Like the black thug, it gives those who seize on it a reason to generalize.
Again, that's not rational, but it's an emotional not an objective sentiment.
Going back to the post I quoted, I'd like to see those in this thread provide evidence of their super scientific credentials compared to Francis Collins. Google that name. Yet he's stupid because a spade is a spade.
In fact we had someone in another religion bashing thread that insisted that Collins wasn't a scientist for all his accomplishments because by some definition one couldn't be a scientist and have any religious beliefs whatsoever.
Now that's a reality disconnect.
For me it's not if a person has faith at all, but what they have faith about. If it's that the earth is 10k or 6k years then it's a non starter. To call ALL stupid is being as bigoted as saying ALL blacks are criminals.
