why aren't there more black guys in hockey?

b-ball is full of them because of their size which is naturally larger than average. but why aren't there more of them in hockey?

is it:

1) just a general lack of interest (i.e. they're into b-ball more)
2) lack something the white guys do better traditionally (yeah, doesn't make sense to me either)
3) hockey's an expensive sport to be involved in (skates, protective equipment etc.)
4) doesn't really snow where they live (any demographic experts?)

point #3 is something a black friend once alluded to. his point basically was that growing up, it's harder for black families to afford having kids into hockey given their overall economic status.

oh btw, i know this thread has the potential to explode in a spectacular fashion but i'm curious nevertheless.

Because the areas of the world that hockey is popular in are not quite known for their black demographics.

Hockey, much like any other sport, will not take you too far in life unless you play it your whole life. It's not an easy sport to just pick up.

A couple decades ago I would consider the "too expensive" thing to be quite feasable, but if you look at it now it's probably because there are no black hockey players for younger kids to relate to easily. I know it sounds a bit off-color, but a lot of kids will pick favorite players based on ethnicity.

In high school, I had a black history teacher and he said the reason you don't see a lot of black hockey players is because the only thing that's black in hockey is the puck and it gets slapped around all the time. 😀

hmm if they have to worry about floating there is something wrong with the rink..

i think he's trying to say if blacks were playing hockey the whites would make the ice thin so they'd fall in

I think it is a combination of things really. First off, you had true all-star level talent players that could just not break through due to racial issues in years past. So in a sense it would have been hard several decades ago for men of colour to break in to pro hockey. Herb Carnegie is a great example. In the late 30s and early 40s, he was one of the best players of his time but Conn Smythe would not give him a shot with the Leafs because he was black. Carnegie returned to his hometown of Timmins, Ontario (it doesn't get much colder, trust me I've been there) to form a line with the Sherbrooke Rand called the Black Aces which featured his brothers Mannie and Ossie. Secondly I do think geography might have played a part in less black men playing the game, but not any more.

Willie O'Ree was the first black man to play in the NHL for the Bruins in 1958.

There are too many good black players to name these days. Basically, there are quite a few black guys in hockey at the NHL level and even more at the college and pro level... I think there are a lot more black guys in hockey than ever before.

In order, I think probably 1, 3, and 4 are most accurate.

Also, a good percentage of NHL players come from other countries that don't have a large percentage of black people (not that the 10% in the US is very high).

still won't matter. The rink is only what 8 inches deep?

Lets see, a bunch of white guys with sticks that are allowed to beat each other up and 1 black guy. Guess who is getting checked the most?

Though I'm surprised there aren't more pro- bowlers(not the football kind). I mean, they get a huge black ball that they use to knock down a bunch of white red-necked pins.

But there'd be miniature sharks in the water. With miniature laser beams on their friggin heads.

Unless you're playing on a lake or pond... 😉
