why are vehicle inspections not required in some states ?

Why isn't there a requirement for them ? I alluded to this a few times in the past... that Pimp My Ride show has cars with flailing parts and duct tape plastered all over tin cans on 4 wheels. Granted it's not a large percentage of the vehicles driving around there, but this is apparently all fine and dandy... how would you like a metal piece in your face at 70mph ?

Why is there no inspection in CA (or other states for that matter) ?

No inspection in Michigan. They did it in the past and it didn't work well. I'm all for not having them.

what do you mean when you say it didn't work well ? I started thinking about CA not having a subway system (though Jack Bauer and 24 say otherwise)... people need vehicles to get around, at any cost... is this a contributing factor ?

We have vehicle inspections in TX.

The car is inspected for safety (lights and blinkers working, tires are good, brakes work, etc) and then the car is tested for emissions. If the car passes both parts, then you get an inspection sticker for your car that goes on the windshield next to the registration sticker.

They are a waste of time and money. When I was young and poor Virginia had a requirement that cars be inspected every 6 months. Like most teens and college students I became an expert at getting my car through inspection at minimal cost to me. I would borrow tires from another car, only do the brakes on the wheel they would pop off to inspect, tin can and muffler tape on the exhaust...The list was endless.

After the huge surge in the import scene in CA I've notice more strictness among smog check facilities to see if your car complies with CA smog laws. Most places will decline to smog your car if there is any signs of modifications (exhaust, intake, motor swap). That's pretty much the only visual inspection here in CA.

Who else is authorized to catch speeders other than the cops? Yes I generally leave law enforcement up to the cops, that is what their job is. Once again show me hard statistics that highway safety in states with formal inspections is significantly different than it is in states without a state inspection system.

i would guess its more prominent in more rural areas, not particularly in one state. the problem truly lies in people who try to squeeze every last mile out of a vehicle. I know people still running 79 chevy trucks as their primary vehicle.
That being said, inspection should be manditory for all vehicles over 6 years or 100k miles.

Wow, I realize that was the only possible response to my rhetorical remark, but I'm not so sure you got it now. I'm too lazy to search for a statistic YOU so badly want, but my opinion remains that having people responsibly keep their cars up to code (verified by professionals) is BETTER than having people duct tape parts together and then putting that on the road. I'm not saying people should pay what we have to pay to do it, but considering the alternative, I'd rather. BTW, I don't think the original question has been answered yet. Why are they required by some states then ?

..really is odd. I see all kinds of junkers running around with massive body damage. Headlights missing..trunks won't secure..airbags deployed but not replaced..broken w/shields but if they pass smog they can register the things.

According to most folks here, I live in the heart of "Bubba the Redneck" land and I have yet to see people driving down the road in vehicles held together with duct tape. What kind of podunk area are you living in?

Oh and you say people shouldn't have to pay? Where's the money coming from? These "professionals" don't work for free. So, people WOULD be paying for it probably with yet more taxes.

Hold on, I didn't say people SHOULDN'T have to pay... I just wanted to make a point that I'm not arguing all this because I'm pissed that I have to pay and others don't. There's more to this than money... that $35/yr doesn't really hurt anybody.

inspections are a load of BS. Anything more than five years old will fail. All it does is provide a huge source of income for auto repair places.
It does not SIGNIFICANTLY affect public safety. Sure, it might save one or two lives per year...big deal. Is it worth the 10's of millions of dollars spent fixing things that are not really broken?
