Safety inspections are mostly a joke and are far more about the revenue to the state than any kind of implied concern the state has for individuals. The only thing any government actually cares about is getting your money. I see cars all the time that should not pass the inspection but seem to remain on the road so it is not very effective at much more than getting your money.

My Grandma used to live in Washington, D.C., and they used to have laws about the appearance of your car. If it had dents or paint missing you could get a ticket and had to fix it. This was strictly a racist law, to prevent blacks from driving. These car inspection laws are now strictly moneymakers, money for the govt and for the companies doing the inspecting, and they hire lobbyists.

Bottom Line: LOCAL GOVERNMENTS have the RIGHT to GOVERN their communities the way THEY SEE FIT.

This is why some states have inspections and others don't.

If you want centralized government on a massive scale the USA is the wrong country for you.

I didn't sense any overall "let the feds do it" theme in this thread. What are you smoking?

People are just talking about what they believe the law should be -- IN THEIR STATE. So what.

Are you saying
a) That they shouldn't discuss laws at all?
b) That only elected officials should discuss laws?
c) That any discussion of state-level laws between people in different states automatically means they are trying to establish a world mega government?

I've worked as an inspection mechanic and I can tell you that some of the cars that would come in (and I would fail) were down right scary. I've seen cars with an honest inch of balljoint play and the owner didn't think anything was wrong. I've seen cars with exhausts that were one bump from falling off. I've seen plenty with non-functioning brakes. I would NOT want these cars driving down the road next to me. We put alot of trust in the drivers around us and that they know how to drive. I have far less trust in their ability to keep their cars properly maintained.

Safety inspections are a very good thing.

The car is inspected for safety (lights and blinkers working, tires are good, brakes work, etc) and then the car is tested for emissions. If the car passes both parts, then you get an inspection sticker for your car that goes on the windshield next to the registration sticker.

Sorry, that's not entirely true. Several rural counties do not yet require emissions inspections. In Liberty County, I pay $12.50 for a yearly inspection when they check all of the lights, horn, signals, gas cap and brakes. My PU truck doesn't even have tailpipes to hook the emissions device up to but it has passed a TX state inspection for 3 years in that condition.
You're right. I meant to go back and edit my post but got busy at work. Not all counties in Texas perform emissions checks during vehicle inspections.

Counties in Texas performing emissions testing

And growing up in Liberty county (birth to 18 years old), Liberty county definitely needs emissions testing. LOL

Not everywhere in Texas! I just got mine done the other day, and we don't have any smog requirement. In fact, only the major metropolitan areas have that requirement......and I'm happy for them! ;)

California doesn't care if your car is falling apart......just so long as it doesn't add any smog to the atmosphere!

Oh yeah, and I'm sure that if the tv show '24' is showing a subway in CA, it's likely the one in LA. Also, the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) system in the SF Bay area has some sections underground. In fact, they have a tunnel that goes under the bay, from Oakland to SF, if I remember right, so the comment on CA not having subways is wrong, fyi.

Grandma was selling you a line unless Grandma lived in DC in the early 1950's. DC is a majority black city and has been for a long time and most of their traffic enforcement rules and efforts serve 1 single purpose: Generate lots of revenue.

IIRC, there are inspections in TX and LA but not in AR.

No smog inspection in LA, they will check if you are up to date with registration, insurance, and all your car equipments such as wipers, horn, signals, etc will work.
