It's the great dumbing down of the american driver.

IMHO, the great dumbing down of american drivers happened when people started driving SUVs, thinking they're invincible and everyone else should get out of their way.

Lol. I have the feeling that a vast majority of the ATOT crowd lives up north. Here in La about 1/2 of all vehicles on the road are trucks, and aside from the luxury battleships that the rich guys that live in the ritsy neighborhoods buy, almost everyone uses their truck in it's "intend purpose" sometimes. Whether I am hauling furniture around, spreading rocks, or just throwing the groceries in the back, my bed does get put to good use. SUV's are everywhere, but once you get out of the upper middle class neighborhoods and go out more towards the country you more and more people using trucks for just about everything. I would say that it is vital for some people.

American drivers have always been dumb. And what's with all of the assumptions that people think they're "invincible" and that "everyone should get out of their way?" What are you, some "road" pyschologist?

I fear elderly drivers more than I fear ANY SUV or pickup driver. Reason why? My only accident involved a 80 year old man gun from a side street across three lanes of traffic right in front of me and I nailed him in the driver's side door (with my old '87 Sunbird) at about 35MPH.

If these vehicles were still being made like they used to, you wouldn't be seeing nearly as many of them on the roads. Not many soccer moms would want to drive around in something that is fairly noisy, bumpy, and doesn't feel like a car.

It's an assumption based on my personal observations of the way many SUV drivers behave.

And yes, I fear elderly drivers more than anyone else...soccer moms on the cell phone with a car full of kids is a close second.

Actually, in my area there are way too many drivers that are overly offensive or overly "defensive" (imho, there's a point where driving slow becomes a danger to others and we don't have highway minimums here).

Elderly drivers are scary... I've seen too many unattentive drivers... too busy talking on the phone or whatnot to keep their eyes on the road and be aware of traffic around them. I nearly the tboned by a stupid woman in the parking lot flying down the lane after I was already half way out. She just kept on talking, BITCH. It's not like my car is hard to see in broad daylight with a shiny arrest-me red.

And then there are the overly offensive drivers that drive harder when the weather conditions turn worse... the best are SUV and truck drivers thinking they're invincible with AWD in snow. I've seen too many stupid blunders in the snow to count, esp with all the freaky snow this year. I learned how to drive in snow so I know the consequences of bad driving in snow.

Back in the seventies when RWD cars were more prevalent, people spun... a lot. My dentist has a giant load in the trunk of his old benz along with snow tires to make it to work with snow. Now with FWD autos the norm, people only understand understeer... and I've seen way to many curb jumpings or cars hitting poles. Whenever I see a pair of ricers screaming down the interstate in their cookie cutter cars with cookie cutter brakes that won't stop them worth crap at those speeds, I get freaked out.

You ever heard of something called personal choice?? A Honda Accord could be more practical for a family with two kids then a Honda Odyssey. A Kia Rio could be more practical to someone than a Honda Civic.

But who cares? It's their money and they buy what they want. Not everyone wants to drive an SUV, not everyone wants to drive a sedan, not everyone wants to drive a minivan, and not everyone wants to drive a pickup.

STOP TRYING TO PIN PEOPLE INTO BUYING WHAT **YOU** THINK IS THE IDEAL VEHICLE FOR THE OCCASION. Let them decide for themselves. Besides, you don't know what the lives are of every driver on the road. You don't know what they're doing 365 days out of the year so how the hell could you POSSIBLY try to fit them into a mold?

Where does the line between personal choice a civic responsibility meet? Sure a tank that spews out toxic chemicals, takes up all 4 lanes in a highway and gets 2 gallons a mile would be great for *me*.

The "sucks for the rest of the world" attitude is just immature and irresponsible.

There's a BIG difference Sherlock. SUV's are vehicles regulated for use on public roads...tanks aren't. Not a very intelligent comparison;)

Also the last time I checked, our Highlander has:

Anti-lock brakes
Electronic brake distribution
Traction control
Electronic Stability Program
Dual Front Airbags
Side Impact Airbags

I haven't see any TANK with those features.

As for the whole "civic responsibility" quip, stop humping Al Gore's leg. If we all lived by your rules, there'd be no SUVs, pickups, minivans, cargo vans, semis, or panel trucks. We'd all be driving Honda Civics and Toyota Corollas which get EXCELLENT gas mileage and exhaust perfume instead of "noxious fumes and emissions"

Since when has that stopped Americans?

It takes the rare person to realize that they shouldn't let the consumer mainstream determine their buying habits. I just recently had a friend with two young kids decide to buy a Mazda Protege sedan over a minivan because they realized they didn't need a big car even with two small kids. He was considering a wagon but decided they didn't need the extra space really.

If you're smart enough to not be a lemming and make an informed, logical decision, then kudos to you. Fools will be fools... I've had people buy MB MLs even after I've had them talk to myself and mercedes techs that told them to their face, it's a piece of JUNK.

The point of the tank comment is it's big, tough, and will walk over anything else. What do anti-lock breaks have to do with anything when you don't need to stop for anything?

Sure your jacked up Camry has those features. IMHO, Highlanders are not the problem that Suburbans, Excursions, H1/H2s and the like are.

Tank -- my feature list run off (including anti-lock brakes) was to show that your Tank comparision was invalid
Suburban -- not sold in large numbers
Excursion -- dead
H1 -- niche vehicle, not many sold
H2 -- same as H1

I drive a full size 4 X 4 pickup with a regular cab and a short bed that gets about 18 mpg on the highway. I got the bigger V-8 because I like the extra power. Perhaps I should have just got the smaller V-8 because with the larger one it starts to smoke the tires even if I give it just a little bit of gas. In 4 wheel drive it just plain hauls. I very seldom use the bed for anything. I've probably used the bed 4 or 5 times in the two years that I've had it. I've never taken it off road even once. What the hell would I want to take my new truck into the bush for? To scratch it all up?
The 4 wheel drive does come in handy though because it snows a lot where I live. The 18 mpg highway doesn't bother me at all because I only live 5 miles from where I work. I bought my truck brand new for around $25,000. If you were to take my truck and put it up on a hoist and compare it to any car that you can get for that price, or any car for that matter, the way that trucks are built makes any car look like a POS. Also, getting in and out of my truck is a breeze because it has full size doors built for adults. There is also ample room inside, and unlike you poor bastards driving your econo boxes, I don't have to squat like a monkey humping a football to fit inside of my truck. The visibility you have looking out through the large windows of a truck is umatched by ANY car. Cars are just plain unsafe to drive compared to driving a truck. You owe it to your loved ones to not get killed in an auto accident because you refused to drive a truck.

LOL. Bias works both ways buddy. Your constant bickering is getting OLD. I am picking you out because you stand out amongst the others as the biggest whiner of them all. Sorry.

What exactly is your problem?
- Can't see around them? You can't see around trucks and minivans.
- Low gas mileage? Go complain about the racers who use gas for "fun"
- Unnecessary use of big car/4WD ? What about all the Porsches and other "sports cars" out there driving on highways with a 55/65mph speed limit?
- Ego? I don't think the ladies some of you guys call "soccer moms" have an ego. Sports car drivers don't huh ?

Point is, people should be allowed to drive whatever they purchase with their money.

So what's your problem again ?

What the hell does Al Gore have to do with any of this?

The point of the tank comment is it's big, tough, and will walk over anything else. What do anti-lock breaks have to do with anything when you don't need to stop for anything?

Sure your jacked up Camry has those features. IMHO, Highlanders are not the problem that Suburbans, Excursions, H1/H2s and the like are.

Al Gore -- environmentalist
Tank -- my feature list run off (including anti-lock brakes) was to show that your Tank comparision was invalid
Suburban -- not sold in large numbers
Excursion -- dead
H1 -- niche vehicle, not many sold
H2 -- same as H1

Next? Are you dense?

I never even mentioned Al Gore. I really couldn't care less what he thinks about this subject.

Your feature listing had absolutely nothing to do with the tank analogy.

As for the 4 vehicles mentioned, they're only the top end of the list. There are plenty others.

And nobody NEEDS a sports car.

Well, if you wanna participate in club racing, it's usually a good idea to have a sports car... heh. True a sports sedan/coupe or roadster can do that too...
wait, nobody NEEDS a convertible do they? heh

So ALL SUV drivers are bad ? Nobody within your family circle drives one huh ? Go yell at them.

No, not all SUV drivers are bad. It's just more noticable since their vehicles take up most of the road.

My parents have a 95 Explorer they drive when the weather gets nasty. My dad is a doctor and has to be able to get to work when there's snow on the ground or people could die. He also uses it to pick up nurses for work in bad weather. It's not a daily driver though. They don't take it out for groceries.

LOL. Bias works both ways buddy. Your constant bickering is getting OLD. I am picking you out because you stand out amongst the others as the biggest whiner of them all. Sorry.

Of course bias works both ways.

Take your bickering and shove it up your ass. NSF4 or Ornery have responded as much as I have. You stating it's my bickering just shows your ignorance.

Some people actually use their "SUVs" for their intended purpose: Off-roading.
The original conception of the SUV was to have a very capable vehicle both off and on road. Many (not all) SUVs these days are no more than 4 wheel drive minivans that rarely go off-road, and couldn't handle much if they did venture off the pavement. Also, who would want to take something off-road that could sustain thousands of dollars worth of damage from just bumping into a sapling?

If these vehicles were still being made like they used to, you wouldn't be seeing nearly as many of them on the roads. Not many soccer moms would want to drive around in something that is fairly noisy, bumpy, and doesn't feel like a car.

1) My gawd, you're the dense one. If you can't understand the Gore reference maybe you should spend some more time watching the news/politics;)
2) The feature list was to point out that you can't compare a modern SUV with a tank. It's retarded.
3) Where's the rest of your list?

Let me re-post here since you probably didn't see my edit:
What exactly is your problem?
- Can't see around them? You can't see around trucks and minivans.
- Low gas mileage? Go complain about the racers who use gas for "fun". Nascar comes to mind.
- Unnecessary use of big car/4WD ? What about all the Porsches and other "sports cars" out there driving on highways with a 55/65mph speed limit?
- They're more dangerous in a collision? Oh wow nothing is more dangerous on the road than an SUV! Not buses, delivery trucks, zipping sportbikes, egotistical ricers/sports car drivers zooming by...
- SUV owners have a larger ego? I don't think the ladies some of you guys call "soccer moms" have an ego. Sports car drivers don't have ANY ego at all do they?

Point is, people should be allowed to drive whatever they purchase with their money without having others 2nd guess their reasoning. Your parents don't take it out for groceries. Ok. The guy down the road has only a sports car to drive around. He doesn't need all that HP to get to the market either does he ? If I have only an SUV, I am wrong in taking it grocery shopping when I live in Buffalo, NY where it snows 32 times a year ?

Quit your whining. There is no single valid reason a person SHOULD NOT own a certain type of car. And about picking on you... I see your name show up beside SUV complaint posts more often than just today.
