Why are trucks excluded in the anti-SUV crowd?

Is there any argument that people against SUV's make that aren't applicable to trucks? The F-series and Silverados have been among the best selling vehicles in the past few decades, and are often driven by people who have no use for the bed, get incredibly low gas mileage, and can promote saftey concerns for other drivers on the road.

I really don't know, but then again, I don't see how people can hate ALL SUV's. My SUV gets decent gas mileage, and its bumper lines up with most normal cars.

Because guns live in a lot of those trucks. When was the last time you saw a Volvo XC90 with a full rack of rifles in the back?

I know you're joking, but I just want to mention that my sports car would be getting 30 mpg if a previous owner hadn't put in a shorter rear end. 4.35 is a wee bit too high for freeway travel. I still get 25 mpg no matter how I drive the car. 25 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the freeway, 25 mpg if I flail it, 25 mpg if I baby it. It's weird. :)

Mustangs get 19/26. Corvettes get like 23/29. I'm sure the 4 banger import "sports cars" get good gas mileage too.

Because trucks are UV's or utility vehicles. People actually use pickup trucks for their intended purpose once in a while but most people with SUV's and cellphones are strictly a nuisance/hazard to other peoples health/comfort level.

It's really pretty simple to see the diff.

Some people actually use their "SUVs" for their intended purpose: Off-roading.
The original conception of the SUV was to have a very capable vehicle both off and on road. Many (not all) SUVs these days are no more than 4 wheel drive minivans that rarely go off-road, and couldn't handle much if they did venture off the pavement. Also, who would want to take something off-road that could sustain thousands of dollars worth of damage from just bumping into a sapling?

If these vehicles were still being made like they used to, you wouldn't be seeing nearly as many of them on the roads. Not many soccer moms would want to drive around in something that is fairly noisy, bumpy, and doesn't feel like a car.

The people who buy trucks for redneck status symbols and nothing else are just as bad as the SUV drivers.

IIRC, Toyota did a study on their trucks, and found that 70% of all owners will NEVER use the bed of their truck, nor will they haul things with it. I'd guess to say that of the remaining 30%, only about 25% of those people use their truck often in things that it was intended for ;)

I'd say the same goes for other truck makers too ;)

A lot of people buy trucks in my area here because... money buys safety... if you can afford a big truck, you can buy safety for you/your family - being the bigger thing on the road helps when you get in an accident.

(not to mention its rual here, and people hitting wilflife on the highways is common)

Because I look at it from a german perspective - Pickup trucks are basically non-existant, nobody buys them because they serve no purpose to anyone but very few special professions, low gas mileage sports cars are usually in excess of $75000-100000 so they are few and do not matter

SUVs on the other hand serve no purpose at all (not here in Germany anyway - there is no off road and wouldnt be allowed anyway - environment anyone) and they are fairly common and numbers increasing

My truck gets 20mpg. Dodge 3/4 ton 4X4 H/O Turbo Diesel.
If it really matters to the spam-in-a-can auto nazis I do use the bed on occasion.

I'd like to know why the moniker "SUV" is to be taken literally when referring to a little 4 door truck? When people buy "Sports Cars" or "Rally Cars" there's no backlash when the drivers NEVER use them for their "intended purpose". Basically, you clowns are hypocritical, ignorant, loud mouths. :|

Less people own gas guzzling sports cars than SUVs (and by gas guzzling I mean a sports car that gets similar gas mileage to an SUV) for one thing. For another people feel less threatened by a 3000 lb sports car running into them than a 5000 lb SUV by some lady on her cell.

In my sentra I can't even see over the freaking hood of an SUV so if we're trying to turn and me right and him/her left I basically have to wait until they're gone.

i always thought it was because sports cars are less likely to rollover and kill more people. the very fact that most people don't "race" their cars means that most are driving within traffic safety guidelines, making them much less of a hazard in an accident. whereas a SUV, even if driving at safe speeds, has a great risk of killing other people in smaller cars, and the passengers themselves if the vehicle rolls over.

Well, considering SUVs sell WAY more units than do sports cars, I think that's the basis most people use. That and the fact they are bloody huge and eat up parking space, make it hard to see around, are generally less safe due to poorer handling and higher rates of rollover. And, they do still get worse gas mileage than a typical sports car. Example, 2003 Ford Mustang GT gets 18/26 and the 6cyl version gets 20/29 (manual) or 19/27 (automatic). On the other end, a standard SUV, Chevy Trailblazer, gets 17/22 (2WD) and 15/19 (4WD). That's quite a bit worse, imo. Even a big ol' Mercedes E320 gets 20/28.

Most people I know that own pickups (newer or older) actually use them to haul things in the bed, help people move, haul trailers, etc.

Good Lord! Do I have to spell this out "Sesame Street" style?
rolleye.gif

SUV=Sport Utility Vehicle=Owner must take off road once in a while or they're... pretenders?

SS, RS, Spyder, Si, GX...=Sports Car=Owner must run in rally or closed race course or... no biggie?

Why MUST the SUV be used for it's "intended purpose", but NOT the sports car?

That reminds me...coming home last night, I was about hit by a woman, talking on her cell phone, driving an Excursion. I was in the left lane of a road and she was pulling out of a parking lot. Apparently, she couldn't be bothered to only stay in the right lane when she was pulling out. The only thing that saved me was the suicide lane. :|
