I don't mind the taste, but those are the top two foods for annoying everyone around you as the smell comes out your skin. The people who eat those things with every meal, often don't realize how badly and strongly they smell.

Actually, Curry is worse because of the smell when it's cooked. There are a lot of Indians in my apartment building, and my eyes water every time I walk in the front door. The vents blowing out from the apartments are right there, and it's really a nuisance.

Yeah try cleaning an apt that was occupied by Curry Eaters. That and the toe jam they leave on the carpet is totally disgusting

That better be sarcasm. Otherwise it's racism and BAN for you.

Rather it smelt like cigarettes and piss? I love the smell of cooking.

My girlfriend is Indian, and she cooks different curries at least 5 days a week; she'd eat it three times a day if we didn't eat out so much. I make it quite a lot too, and to be honest I think I'm a fantastic cook. I'm a little biased though.

IMO, most people don't know what a curry is. They think it's one type of spice, something very specific that you put in a dish (e.g. "I can taste the curry"). I make dry curries, curries with gravy, curries with meat and all types of vegetarian curries (okra, eggplant, potato, mixed vegetable, etc.). A quality curry is one where the spices are prepared before the meal, not one that comes in some box like a garam masala or curry paste.

Contrary to popular belief, most people that eat a lot of curry dishes don't smell like curry, provided that you ventilate the room a little. We cook it all the time, and neither we nor our respective homes smell like it.

Actually it's a nice place and no one is pissing near the building, i've also never seen people standing outside the building and smoking. The smell isn't of cooking, it's only of curry which overwhelms everything else, and my eyes literally tear up every time I walk in or out from that direction. So I would prefer the smell of nothing to curry.

Some people have poor hygiene. I have quite a few Indian friends, and none of them smell at all like curry. This is a silly stereotype.

As I said in my other post, "curry" in and of itself doesn't mean much, so you could be objecting to everything from ginger to mustard seeds. It's far more likely that you're objecting to the actual vegetables, meat, etc. that's used. Vegetable curries don't give off much of a smell, and the spices are overall very pleasing to the senses.

I'd bet my left kidney that your house does smell of it, you just don't notice.

That said, I love curry and I love the smell, no objections here. Garlic is good too, when used in the right dishes.

This thread is a minefield, btw. I WAS going to add my $.02, but I want to be cleared from the blast area when the Mod Bomb goes off.

Well, in my case I am quite certain that it doesn't; however, for those that cook it 3x/day I can imagine that it does. The aroma does linger around for as long as a day sometimes, so I could see how it would be almost permanent in those that cook it frequently.

I'm quite certain that I don't smell like curry at least ;)

Actually you're sterotyping more than I am, so try to read what i'm saying instead of what you assume i'm going to say. Since when is it a stereotype that people who eat garlic and curry sometimes don't know how strongly they smell to others?

You're saying that if they smell of curry then the reason is because of bad hygiene, and that's simply not true. The stereotype of Indians not washing is a much more prevalent, silly, and harmful stereotype. I just said that often people who use either garlic or curry don't realize how bad they smell to others. In no way was that referring to all or even most. I also know many Indians who don't smell of curry. I don't make any comparison, because for all I know they barely even eat curry. I just assume that either they are not eating the same amount or are eating a different kind of curry, or they are doing something to counteract the smell.

I was referring to some Indian people I know who actually do, and a girlfriend who went on a garlic diet because of a health kick she was on. I know for a fact that the girlfriend had good hygiene, but the effect of eating all that garlic was that the smell came out of her skin. When I complained, she even spent longer in the shower and looked up suggestions online, but there was nothing that could be done. There are some spices which are simply stronger than others, and stay with you longer. These are two of them.
