agreed. i think copland is one of the last of the modern "greats."

but i think the question roughly parallels, why are there no great PRESIDENTS anymore? im thinking people like thomas jefferson, george washington, abrahama lincoln and the such. those who argue that times have changed must agree that our presidents today, george bush, bill clinton, are equally great to the founding fathers in their own right... perhaps even greater?

i tend to disagree w/ people who claim this... that today's more "mainstream" music is composed with equal intellect as the works of bach/mozart/brahms/etc... i dont think people realize the magnitude of genius they were. perhaps it may help to realize that the works of beethoven were NOT so highly esteemed during his life (not like now). it was only years after his death..

"Abrahama"..hah...sorry, not a great president. Just a politician like so many of the rest.

Philip Glass?

EDIT:I'm gonna have to agree with you, there really isn't any new great composers. There are some good lyricists and song writers and there are some good musicians and performers but *sigh* no good composers. if I remember correctly Prince used to do all his stuff, like all the vocals and everything including the songwriting. ( I was watching an interview on PBS on him)

WHOA, that is WEIRD.
I was just thinking about this very subject last night.

Or more to the point, wondering it there are any composers alive today that will be thought of in the future in the same way we think of Bach, Wagner, Mozart and the like.

heh i dont know there are still some great peices of work..

I mean come on...how about the song Dr. Zeus!.oooohhh..Dr. Zeus! such a complicated song that must have taken years to write.

Really I think its just not true. Aaron Coplan he truely has some geat stuff. I even marched some of his stuff in my highschool marching band (Winning ACCs with his great work). They are truely great songs. And I also agree with a lot of the people that might have made the great works are no using guitars and are making albums. Instead of growing up with a piano they grew up with a guitar..u never know if they would have been as great if they grew up in the same time period.

And equally wise...John williams is awesome. I mean he is the one thing that stayed great all the way through star wars

my man glass... gorecki, also

I think one contributing factor as well is : i cannot name many -modern- composers though i played in a university symphony orchestra, took theory classes, and performed extensively as a percussionist in wind ensembles for the last few years. Yet i know the lyrics to most of the new foo fighters songs 😉 There just isn't a -great- demand for the works set for symphony settings sadly 🙁 Though i think in the next couple years we'll start to unveil the more genius works of the mid 20th century-late 20th century.

It seems unlike 'popular' music which is like nasty beer, best drank right away in large amounts to achieve drunk then quickly forgotten; Orchestral music is like fine wine to be aged and then appreciated at a different time then the moment it first is prepared and bottled.

I like Nobuo Uematsu video game music (final fantasy series). It sounded great, even on the SNES. But this type of music is niche & attracts only a certain type of people.
