Why are Texas A&M people so obsessed with being "Aggies"?

I dunno.. up here in suburban north Texas, all the idiots at the school are obsessed with becoming Aggies too. If you ask em why, they'll tell ya they don't know. Well, actually, they don't really talk, but kinda grunt and dry hump girls' legs. I'm sure half the people down there don't know either. *shrug*

It probably has something to do with beer and parties and things I don't know anything about cause I'm such a nerd and all and wanna go to college for...education! And fun, gotta have some fun.. like LANs.. haha.

Oh well. I'm off to UTD for their CS program, and the fact that they're close and affordable.

Another Longhorn here speaking ....

Many of my friends are Aggies, in fact, out of all my friends, i am the only who came down to UT.

A&M is indeed a very conservative school, republicans & christians like above mentioned.
And did i tell you that Aggies hate UT with a passion? Maybe they feel inferior to us Longhorsn or something ... i don't know 🙂

UT definitely has a strong CS program, ranked top 10 last year by U.S. news ( i believe it was #7, but i am not sure )

But i can not say the same for A&M, did not see it in the top 15 rankings in C.S.

Anyways, here is a website of one of my friend who goes to A&M, she has a pictures of life @ A&M, you can take a peek here

agh, i go to university of guelph and we have aggies.

if you are one you're so proud

if you arent one you are disgusted by them.

*kat. <-- NOT AN AGGIE DAMMIT.

<< regardless of the quality of the school, are you sure you want to live in Texas? >>

You forget your Bible: "On Earth as it is in TEXAS" 😀 😀

<< UT CS can't be that hard to get into... all my friends are in it and half of them are "dumb". >>

i was fortunate enough to be accepted into the CS major at UT in '98, but now they have the retarded "pre-cs" program for incoming freshmen. not really difficult, but if you want to be accepted into the CS major sequence, you have to make a B or better in the weedout CS classes like CS304P (which is Java now i believe), CS315 (another java class), and i think CS303E? (not really sure cuz this wasn't available in '98) when i was a fishy, i tested out of 304P (pascal) and 315 was taught in c++.... ah wellz

now back on topic... i think living in Texas, we hear about aggies all the time, but don't most students at any school take pride in their mascot?? longhorns, wolverines, tigers, whatever... doesn't seem so "obsessive" to me

*edit* just wanted to add that AUSTIN KICKS A55!~! 😉 *edit*

<< regardless of the quality of the school, are you sure you want to live in Texas? >>

haha, my parents said the same thing 😛

well i'll tell you this much, if rice accepts me, i'm going. get me a piece of that bachelor/master combo action 🙂

just looked it up... texas a&m is 17th for compsci... that's not bad 🙂

johns hopkins is 20... but i dunno. i think given the choice i would rather go to jhu. i guess it has a more prestigious name.

I attend A&M right now and it is a good school and you won't see very many hicks in the engineering dept. I was in the CS track for about a year and it was nothing but programming which isnt what I wanted (I wanted to do something in the technical arena but sure as hell don't want to program for a living). Don't let ANY longhorn tell you about A&M they dont know Sh!t about College Station and Texas A&M. One note though, if you come here STAY on your degree plan. If you get off you get crappy foreign techers, beleive me.

okay, i need more explanation 😛 how does changing your degree plan get you foreign teachers? 😕

btw, i was admitted as lower division, but from looking at the reqs for upper division, i'm not sure why i wasn't admitted as that. how good is the advising department? will they try and do everything in their power to prevent me from entering as upper division, or will they be reasonable about it? also, is it common for people to not make it into upper division? i got 4.0 and 3.7 in the two pre-major courses here (C and C++ programming), so i don't think it should be too much trouble for me.

Well basically if you make a C or lower you have to retake the (CBK = core courses ie CS classes) courses and when you get off you get crappier teachers.... I think you might have trouble going straight to upper levels though, the CS dept is flooded with admissions so they are more strict than they used to be but if you have tested out of the lower levels you can move to upperlevels... but you have to be so far along in the math to get into the upper level classes....

far along in math? what is math 152? i've taken the entire calculus series and am working on linear algebra here. hmm... i think i might have fallen short on the CPSC 211 requirement. damn them! 😛

Yes, Aggies have a lot of pride. It is a different experience being an Aggie, as I have never been to a school with as much comraderie and tradition. You don't have to be a hard core Aggie though. I met plenty of different people (definately have liberals there) from all backgrounds and countries. The worst thing when I attended was its remote location, 80 minutes to nearest big city in Houston. But other than that, it was one of the best experiences of my life 🙂

<< Im not sure, never did get that far along... but 152 is

Math 152 Engineering Math II.....
>>

ah i see, thanks 🙂

i just pulled up the transfer credit sheet they sent me. looks like i have the math taken care of, as i met those requirements with the first calc class i took. if you ask me, 152 should have been transferred from 125 here, since 124 doesn't deal with integrals, but i'm not going to complain, i 4.0ed 124 🙂

i think what caught me is the cs requirements... looks like classes taught there are in java. i'll have to see if i can talk to an advisor about that 😛

And with good reason too, we Longhorns go to a real school. I can't imagining living in College Station either. Have fun at the dixie chicken or whatever else the do there these days.

<< Maybe they feel inferior to us Longhorsn or something ... i don't know 🙂 >>

<< hey if you have any more questions send me a AIM : jagouar12 or ICQ: 119394515 >>

uh well i was going to, but then i thought i maybe it is better if i post here so that other aggie people can answer it 🙂

how is the student job situation there? i have a really good job here at the uw (best student job imho) working as a student lead, supporting our mail list server. 10.50 an hour... are such opportunities available there?

I went to undergrad at Texas A&M as a transfer from Baylor. I expected to hate it, but I ended up really loving it. There is something about Aggieland that is really hard to describe. There is an incredible school spirit that really binds up as Aggies... long after graduation.

After graduating from aTm, I went to law school at the University of Houston Law Center. I graduate next Friday. 😀 WHOOP!

There is a lot of stereotyping about Texas A&M that is pretty unfair. We don't just drink beer... There are plenty of bars you can go to to drink whatever you like. It is not all C&W dancing either. There are nightclubs that appeal to your particular musical taste - however unrefined.

These types of stereotypes are about as fair as saying that all Longhorns are goatee'd ass monkeys. This is clearly not true... some are actually straight. 😉

A&M is a great school, and they have a really nice CS program. You can't lose with either UT's or aTm's CS programs. Aggies do network a lot, and the Aggie connection does get people jobs.

I am biased. 😀

FIGHTIN' TEXAS AGGIE CLASS OF '96

GIG 'EM AGS!

WHOOP!

don't let any Aggies tell you anything about UT & Austin either .... they are jealous that we actually have a nightlife here 😉

I see you've applied to Rice. 🙂

Great school. That should be your first choice.

but...

Remember cost of living. Austin is incredibly expensive. You beer money goes a lot further in College Station. 😀

Also - what the hell else is there to college other than going to bars, getting drunk, and getting laid?
That is a pretty fair summary of what goes on in College Station. How is Austin any different?

I'm just curious...

do you have any numbers? just curious, because i don't imagine it would be too much higher than here (seattle)...

the thing that's going to rape me is out of state tuition 🙁 i mean my parents are paying for it, but being the good asian kid i am, i feel the rape too.

Did I say anything bad about Austin???? Im talking to all those people in austin that dont know anything about College Station or Texas A&M.
