Why are Texas A&M people so obsessed with being "Aggies"?

texas a&m is my backup school for a cs major, which is why i have any interest in this topic... i dunno. i don't think any other school places such a high emphasis on their mascot or nickname. and what is up with all the weird things they have going on, like fish day? wtf? it seems like they have a lot of little rituals and traditions that other schools don't have.

I don't understand why you want to go to A&M.
If was doing CSE I would go to UT Austin.
Does A&M have a better program or Rep. ?

there was one of two reasons i didn't apply for UT Austin (i forget which):

i missed the deadline, or
i couldn't enter as a cse major

the latter is important to me, because i don't want to be stuck at some school and still not be a cse major (why i'm transferring in the first place).

gig 'em!

but seriously, Aggies take a lot of sh!t from other Texans. Aggie Jokes are more common than Blonde Jokes. "You Aggie", to a non-Aggie, is usually taken as an insult, if a light-hearted one. Everybody knows that A&M is really a good school though. I don't know, there's just something magical about the place IMO. It's got a lot of tradition and a lot of spirit.

Heh, in 7th grade I 'defected' from Texas Tech to Texas A&M as a football fan. My dad nearly disowned me!

really? i remember us news and world report gave it a 3.6 or something like that, which is decent i guess, but all those jokes people make really worries me. so if i graduate from there, i won't have like a harder time of getting a job or anything, will i?

A&M = Agricultural and Mechanical. It's got a very good reputation in those fields. They're tops in crop science and the like. Also very good with engineering, and it's the #1 Petroleum Engineering school in the US IIRC. I wouldn't call it a hick school.

I wouldn't have a problem going there for CS. UT is probably better, but hey, nobody'll look down on you for attending A&M. And getting a job will be SO easy! Aggies network like you wouldn't believe, and they've got a TON of alumni.

I'd say it's definitely in the top 10-15 public universities in the U.S. It's definitely top-10 if you count the University of California as all one entity.

Rice is a lot better though, esp. for CS.

Hey Hey! I went to Marquette University ;)

But half my high school went to A&M, the other half to UT :D

I see what your saying. No, you get all kinds there just like any other college.

Its that the WAKOS in the Aggie Corps are the ones that stick out :D

no, they're not a hick school... their agricultural school is really famous as is their vetrinary school. they're the ones cloning the cats and they're the ones who genetically modified a carrot to be maroon. guess they didnt like the color orange :p (for ya northerners, aggies are rivals with us UT longhorns whose color is burnt orange) anyway... i'm guessing you didnt want to go to UT's cs program because our cs program is in the natural sciences school and not in engineering, because we have a computer engineering program in addition to cs.

EDIT: oh yea, HOOK EM HORNS!!!

:p:p:p:p:p

longhorns network like crazy too... a&m and ut keep flipflopping back and forth for the networking title...

A&M sucks as a school and you'd be dumb to go there. Why would you want to be with a bunch of hicks that spend their time playing grab @ss and chasing sheep? Even if you don't get into UT as a CS major, you can transfer in later.

okay, i see... thanks tex.

everybody's a UT fan i see :p i was really just curious about a&m because i dont' know that much about it. i'm probably not going to go there anyways... i have to get rejected from 5 different cs programs before that comes up as an option.

Texas A&M isn¡¦t anything like critics think it is. However it isn¡¦t for everyone, A&M is a very conservative school so most students are Christians and republicans. As far as it being a hick school, yes there are hicks in the agriculture department and there are country western clubs in this city. I don¡¦t know if that really makes it a hick school, just trying to give you an objective view as best I can. However you said your interested in Computer Science which is in the engineering department, so you won¡¦t be around a bunch of hicks trust me. A&M¡¦s engineering department has a very good reputation in the work field, and the engineering department offers some of the most challenging majors this school offers. So I wouldn¡¦t worry about it being to easy because trust me it isn¡¦t. If I had to be critical about the CS major (which I am in and have about 74 hours completed after this semester) I would say it is very math intensive. You will be required to take engineering calculus 1, 2, and 3, Discrete, and either Linear Algebra or Differential Equations. From what I have heard about other schools, this is way above average.

There are several regular night clubs here so it¡¦s not all country and there is really plenty of stuff going on to keep most people busy. Not like your going to have any free time anyway being in the engineering department. I would say A&M is weird as in different, because you can¡¦t deny that it¡¦s different here. A&M is in college station which is obviously a college town. So where ever you go all you see is other people your age. And about being obsessed with being an Aggie, I think a lot of people come here and make great friends like you would at any college and its something to identify with. The same way if a person from UT met another UT grad they would want to chat and trade stories. Some are flamboyant and annoying I agree, but for the majority most of us just like our school and that¡¦s why we go here.

I believe UT¡¦s CS program is ranked higher as I think someone mentioned, Hope this post helps, if all goes well you won¡¦t even be going here anyway ?º. Sorry to all the Horn¡¦s fan¡¦s that had to read this I just had to post something for the other side. I tried to be objective but I go to A&M, so you be the judge. IM if you have any questions, i don't follow up post that often.

i don't think it is above average... that is about what we have to do here at the UW. i've already taken the calc classes and am taking linear algebra :)

well, you have one post to your name :p

thanks for the info, i really appreciate it.

if you don't like to drink beer :D and country dance :( theres not much to do at A&M except play golf (they've got a track there in the "front yard" of the school:cool;) you're an hour and a half from austin or houston. theres a lot of people that really do bleed maroon over there. and they're quite proud of it. there are people that aren't nuts about being aggies and are just trying to get an education. the people that don't want bonfire to ever come back, i suppose. maybe i'll go to that this year...

UT CS can't be that hard to get into... all my friends are in it and half of them are "dumb".
