Why are some parents so damn ignorant?

So I work at a kid's park. This morning we had a school group booking. It was comprised of four schools, one which came from an indian reserve. So I'm loading kids into the ferris wheel. There are 6 cages. I've loaded 4 cages with 5 or 6 people. The other two cages had 4 each. So this little girl comes back from the bathroom. I go to load her into one of the cages that has 4 kids. These cages happen to have the native kids in it. The kid's Mom says to me, oh can you put her into another cage with kids she knows. She asks me to put her in a cage with a Grandpa and four other kids. Being the nice guy I am, and it being to early for me to start fighting with the patrons I put this kid in the already packed cage.

First off, kids have the easiest time making friends. It doesn't take much more then a "hello" and you've got two fast friends. But what pisses me off is parents projecting their personal prejudices on their kids. I know damn well this lady didn't want her kid riding with the 4 native kids.

It's frusterating. What chance has this kid got?, if their parent won't even let them go on a ride with someone with different coloured skin.

Yeah I know. It's just wrong though. I've worked with kids for 10 years now. I'll be a teacher in a few more. I just hate to see ignorance like that.

Maybe the mother just thought it'd be more fun for her to be with her friends on the ferris wheel.

Maybe you're reading too much into it.

it can definetly be frustrating. my redneck in-laws are that way. it p!sses me off when they say racist things in front of my 3yo son, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Yeah I thought that too. But this really isn't an isolated incident. I see it quite often.

You see what quite often? That parents want their children to spend time with their friends?

I think you are reading too much into it, unless something else happened that you aren't telling us that made you come to that conclusion.... I think the woman just wanted her daughter to be with her friends. Seems reasonable enough for me.

That the don't want their kids riding with native kids.

I'm all for wanting the kids to have fun, their are two other rides as well. But how much fun is it being stuck in a cage so tight that you can barely breath?

I'd say it was mostly the look she gave me. It's hard to explain, but I really don't think it was just for her to be with her friends. And this booking was organized by four schools together. So whatever happened to making new friends?

somebody's been watching too much TV.

The mother simply wanted her child to enjoy the ride with her friends.

Let's put you in this situation - you get on an airplane with your buddies but your seat says "sit with these folks you don't know while all of your buddies are together having fun". Would you not ask the stewardess "can i sit with my buddies, please?"

damn racist

Oh come on. Heaven forbid you didn't get to spend a whole 4.5 minutes on a ride with your friends. That same ride in which you would be on again in 35 minutes. That same ride that had 4 other cages filled to the max, but there was room to go with a few other kids, who are part of your group anyways.

Whoever said kids can't make new friends?

If her intentions are what you say, that is inexcusable. However, IMO you are jumping to conclusion and possibly she just wanted her child to be with her friends and possibly a guardian (not sure what position the grandpa was on the field trip, was he a chaperon?).

IF the friends were in the packed cage, I would say you're reading too much into it.

IF neither cage had people the kid knew and the mom still requested that, then you have a case.

Even if she were "racist", but the kid's friends were really in the crammed cage, the sole driving force behind her request would be to make the kid feel more comfortable with familiars. That'd be my request too as a parent.

I'm asian, and a non-racist, not even against blacks (the big stereotype). In fact, I will make it a point to show people I will let them congregate if it ever happens. This world needs to be rid of the previous generations anyway... but back to your story...

I would assume they are chaperons. There was a few parents with each group. I could understand if these were 2 and 3 year olds. They need an adult. But these kids were 7 or 8.

Hell I don't deny that I might be overreacting. But this isn't the first time I've seen it happen.

And the thing is that this group was all together. They all came on the same bus. I would assume that they had some interaction with eachother before hand.
