I got my wife an A80 for Christmas, and yes, this thing ROCKS! I LOVE IT! I don't have a problem with the AA batteries at all. Yeah you need four, but I got 8 rechargable Monster 2100mAh batteries and four of these things last a LONG time! It takes AWESOME pictures and the flip out LCD is great!

I was going to get her an A70, A80 or S400. The S400 is a great camera but too damn small for me. The A70 was cool, but I liked the A80 better. I chose the A80 because it just felt right in my hands (she liked it too :)). The 4MP and the flip out LCD were also deciding factors. I like how you can turn the LCD around so when you put it away, the LCD is protected. Very cool!

I only have an A60 and I love it, so I can imagine the A70 is just that much better.

Although it does seem a bit feeble after playing with my brother's new Canon G5. :p

The answer is that 3.2MP isn't 3.2MP. Further, I would be willing to bet that those cameras don't have nearly as many features as the Canon.

MegaPixels are like the MHz of the digital camera world. Basing the camera soley off that is like kicking yourself in the ass repeatedly for no reason.

If you're looking for a small point and shoot cam, then the A70 may not be for you.. get a S series.

If you want good point and shoot pics and the ability to muck with the settings, the A70 is definately one of the best choices. Plus its awesome macro capabilities.. Not many other cams(any?) in its price range can focus down to 1.96850394 inches in macro mode. :p

As for the batteries.. eh? I consider being able to use four normal NiMH AA batteries to be a good thing. No proprietary battery packs to change when the rechargables have finally charged their last charge.

5 MP Kodak...

Looks like Kodak is getting serious. I've seen this for under $300. Text

wow...that thing takes amazing pics!! look at the sample pics...the colors are so vibrant!! nice. but i dont like the body the camera comes in though
Hmmmmm..........

They don't look all that great to me for some reason......?

I agree ... the colors are too saturated. I wonder how much it suffers from clipping.
But still, not too shaby for a $290 camera.

Yeah, IMO this looks better: A70 (granted the res is a bit different).

depends. jpg has many levels of compression. each company decides on that for their cameras. most cameras have 3 settings. S M L.

I'd rather have more saturation than less. You can always decrease saturation without any ill effects; the same is not so for increasing saturation.

In the film world Kodak is known for their high saturation film, it's no surprise they follow suit in digi. Looks nice...

I want the Canon S400. Fortunately I currently have a Fuji 1400, Canon S200 and Canon A40 to keep me busy :)

I sold my s200 and bought the s400 for my Christmas Cruise vacation.

I think it was worth it.

You got it right.

A few month back Kodak restructured and said they were really going to concentrate on digital. (better late than never).

From what I see, the least that can come out of this is better competition and better prices. $260 for a 5 MP camera sure does make the 4-5 Megapixel Canons etc. look a hundred or more over priced.

RE:"Yeah, IMO this looks better"

I like the greater saturation of the Kodak. The Kodak appears sharper and more detailed too. Like you said. The resolution on the A70 is substantially less than the Kodak. But the price is about the same. The body of the Kodak is more fugly but the proof of the udding is in the pictures.
Apparently the Kodak doesn't have a lot of exposure controls...just a entry level High res camera. Fits a great niche...since I never have the time to fug around much with the controls anyway.

What do you use? A SLR? :p

The A70, while it is a point and shoot cam... you also have to remember that it offers full manual controls, something most if not all "point and shoot" cams in its class don't offer.

35mm SLR for me. I won't buy a digital until the DSLR come into my effective price range ... I could buy one now but I just wouldn't use it enough to justify the $900 pricetag for the lowest end.

Flatbed scanner and pictureCDs works fine until then :)

is the difference between a 2mp and 3mp camera only the resolution of pics it can take?
ie pictures taken at the same resolution by both cameras have exactly the same quality?

im thinking whether to get the a60 or a70

Damn ... I wish we had Private Topics back.
A thread for A70 owners would be very nice.
