No. As I said above, MP are the MHz of the digital camera world.

It's only something you should keep in mind while shopping for digital cameras. My 2MP A60 with its high quality optics has the potential to outperform even a 4MP camera with a low quality optics.

Then you have to take into account settings & features. It is very possible that I could get the "perfect" shot with manual mode on my A60, while the all auto camera would be confused or just not do it right- and there wouldn't be a damn thing you could do about it. Zoom length? Minimum focus distance? Shutter speed and f/ correlations?

I recommend doing many hours of research before you purchase. That way you will know exactly what you are getting(and/or getting yourself into...)

I chose the A70 because it was the Canon digital in my price range.

You see, I have been using EOS-1D's for about ayear now, so I know the Canon peeps know what they are doing.

That, and because it uses Compact Flash memory, and we currently have 14 or 15 1gb cards in my house. HAHAHAHAHA.

And I like that it takes 4 AA's - cheap batteries, and they last forever (my dad got his A70 ~6 months ago, and is still on the batteries that came with it.)

and its small! It takes getting used to, but I like it.

Its my fav mid-ranger.

Nobody is going to pay that for it. The big deal is the Hot Deals that can be had on that camera. With it being sold at Staples or OfficeMax, you could do a price match, add a coupon and rebate, and walk off with a great deal. Anybody who paid over $250.00 for it, didn't try very hard.

Heh well there are things I can do with my SLR film that you couldn't dream of with just about any consumer digicam out there :)

Film will be around for quite some time, mark my words.

Of course it will.

But we are not far off from digital surpassing film. Mark my words. ;) Maybe.. 10 years?

It will be like CDs and Tapes. You can still get tapes, but who uses them? :p

I got one for Christmas and it simply takes great pics. I made my first little movie today with it too and compressed it using Microsoft's free Movie Maker program. Very cool.

I like the control it gives and that it has four batteries. The pictures are coming out so nice that my friend is about to dump her Minolta S304 DiMAGE 3.3mp camera and get an A70 too. :)

Not really. There will always be advantages to film. Or at least through the forseeable future, barring some sort of digital revolution.

The Canon EOS-1Ds pretty much blurs the lines between film and digital cameras. Yeah it costs an arm and a leg, but this camera is freakin' AMAZING!

Yep. We're already there, really.

All we need to do now is wait for the 10+MP technology to filter down into the consumer cameras. :)

was looking into the a70. but took it off my list when i saw it needs 4 batteries!!
That's a selling point for me. Take more shots before battery change.
I've no idea -- I hate point and shoot cams and refuse to buy one
SLRs have point and shoot modes, too. ;)

Different cameras totally. BTW it takes 4 AA batteries, mine can shoot about 350pics....if my batteries die I can easily buy another 4 AA's to get my pictures done. The SD100 takes a proprietary pack....

Proprietary battery packs and memory cards are bogus, dude. :) Give me AA's and CF, thanks.

There are plenty of cameras cheaper than the A70....but hardly any could be declared a 'better value'.

You get sound and video recording up to 640x480, you get Auto, Tv, Av, P, and M modes, you get the 'panoramic' assist, you get the 5 or so 'auto' modes.

It takes CF cards as well as standard AA's. It can take add on lenses basically doubling it's telephoto, wide angle and closeup abilities.

It comes in a compact size for all this. There are smaller cameras sure....but then you loose features most of the time.

The G series is like comparing a 4 door to a 2 door car...totally different beasts....same with the S series.

Yeah, the A70 is a bit overrated. I got one for my sister for Christmas, and I don't think that it is as nice as my S45. My camera has a bigger and brighter LCD, is more compact, and has all of the same manual features. The lens attachment option is nice, though, but I doubt that my sister will ever use it.

Well you are talking about a camera that is at least $100 more than the A70, both at their lowest non-refurbished price points....for the A70 that is nearly 50% more in cost. If you were to compare the S45 with $475 cameras, it'd probably not look so nice either :)

I looked a long time for a decent camera....it came down to the G2/3 or the A70/80....I chose the A70 and have not been disappointed in about 1000 pics now. Had I gotten the G series I would have only taken about 500 perhaps now....the compactness is a big plus as was the price and battery selection (my A50 needed a special battery and even with 3 I ran out of juice sometimes :( ).

640x480 movie mode is very nice. See my tip thread on how to covert A70 movies from 20 MB J-MPEG format to 4MB something .WMV format...
+ manual controll option and inexpensive add-on lenses option...
Great camera!
Edit: It last 5 hours on 2100 rated batteries too!

If you really don't take advantage of the manual settings and don't print large pics, there really isn't a diff in the a60, a70, and a80...

I recently purchased an A60 for a gift. Nice little camera without a steep learning curve.

And don't buy a digital camera from Best Buy...

For $299 (less after rebates actually) I picked up a Samsung digimax V4 and am very impressed. It has a Schneider lens
and the pictures are easily as good as the Canon's, plus it has even more features and is laid out very well. It also accepts
9 different power sources and came with a rechargable lithium ion battery pack, 32mb SD card, and leather pouch. It's very
compact and as an amazing array of manaul controls in addition to simple point and shoot modes. I deliberated long and hard
over the A70, the Fuji Finepix a303, and the Samsung V3. I actually ended up going with the V4. :) Ross is right about the
Kodak and HP though. I always dislike the Olympus because its controls are a pain in the butt, (expecially the clamshell mechanism)
but it takes better photos than the Kodak or HP.

I'd refuse to buy something that requires propietary packs or memory.

I love this macro feature ya'll are talking about. I know that my camera I have can't take a pic any closer than about 3 feet, and it's a bit of a pain.

Any extra details on the lens option? 3X optical is ok (digital who gives a fvck about that) - with the lens add ons can you get additional zooming, and how much zooming for what cost? :0

BTW this is almost sure to be a bestbuy purchase, because I have $75 in GCs for BB. I suppose I could buy a new xbox and sell mine as an as-is, because of the damn DVD player in it though.

Macro mode is sweet. My camera has up to a 6cm super macro, here is a pic I took for some ram I'm selling in the other forum:

http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/papabobdole/SV400015.JPG

I took some cooler closeup pics of stuff but none of them are online and I'm at work. :( I'm still getting the hang of it, but it's pretty sweet.
