I actually agree with the OP, and recently bought a Wega SDTV. We don't watch many DVDs - maybe one a month. Most of the TV we do watch, with the exception of sports, is from a DVR, and it would have required another $500 investment to upgrade to an HDTV DVR (through DishNetwork). I live too far in the boonies to get broadcast HDTV from ANY station right now, so all I would have had access to is a few stations from Dish, and I ABSOLUTELY HATE the stretch mode for SDTV, which is what at least 90% of our viewing would consist of. It just didn't make sense right now. So I figured I'd get the Wega, keep it in the living room until HDTV made more sense for us, then move it to the bedroom and replace it with a nice RPTV.

network TV might be in HD but then again network TV sucks major fvcking ass

really?

24? alias? desperate housewives? conan obrien? csi? law and order? enterprise? any decent doumentary on pbs.

anything worth watching during prime time is HDTV. if you are complaining about 24/7 broadcasting..whoc ares what daytime broadcasts are showing.. thats cr@p and u shouldn't be watching during the day anyways.

yes really,
24 has sucked after season 2, and i never found it that interesting anyway
alias never intrested me in the least, and frankly i dont knwo why anyone watches it
housewives i couldent care less about i saw 1 show and i thought it was crap
conan obrien - should be eliminated from being, because he sucks that badly
csi, i might watch every 2 months or so
l&O isnt worth it now that lenny isnt on
star trek hasent been worth watching sence next gen

PBS however i will watch, we dont get PBS in HD here so that is also pointless, it looks fine a normal TV to me, funny the PBS is the BEST choice out of all thoes you listed

the truth is i watch mabye MABYE 2 hours of Tv a day, 30 min of which is world news tonight with peter jennings, i turn it on during dinner, that does not need to be in HD, thre rest are cartoons like Fam Guy and ATHF, or whatever is on cartoon network between 11-1

now if i could get Cartoon Network in HD that would be cool, but i wouldent go and buy a 1000$ Tv for it
the TV i have now works fine and looks fine to me

HDTV does not BLOW ME AWAY, like it does some of you, yes it looks better but not nearly enough better to spend 1000$ on a new tv

actually id most likely buy a EDTV lightyears before i got a HDTV

you are old and ornery and sh*t aren't u.
24 was good seasons 1 and 4. thats good enough for hdtv. desperate housewives is good. conan is undeniably good. csi is undeniably good, law and order and all its incarnations are consistently entertaining.. its the reliable fallback entertainment it is...and thats good enough
startrek enterprise has been good since season 3.
pbs is broadcast in hd where its worth living, so i guess u should move hehe

i guess you are a rare breed, one who almost exclusively watches news and cartoons.

the rest of us need and see the point of hdtv for the shows we watch.

See, you are doing it again. You are talking about how you feel about certain TV shows like it is how everyone should feel or there is something wrong. Just because you like all that crap, we should too? Are you really that self centered to think your opinion on various TV shows is the norm, while everyone that disagrees is just wrong?

To top it off, even though you are joking, you are telling him to move to get PBS in HD? Yeah right...

no, i'm just saying it isn't all bad.. i'm admitting some of the shows aren't consistently awesome, but u can't really claim these shows are totally horrible .... the ratings don't support that. let alone the critics. and the spawning of copy cats based on the successes of certain series, like csi/law and order etc. some of those survived on prime time for several years now, its not because they are horrible and lose money thats for sure. really.. its not just me that likes these shows, it is pretty obvious the norm...unless you are going to argue that these shows are popular for no reason.. or really aren't:p

and i was kiddin about pbs. but pbs in hd is definetly awesome though...and even if you are finicky about tv and think it is worthless, pbs is generally the exception.

Ok, well I can agree with most of that...except for the ratings. I'm sure all this reality show junk that's on TV get's high ratings too....doesn't make it good, or anywhere near it.

The thing with alot of the show you mentioned, like 24 and Alias, if you don't watch them regularly, then they are much less appealing.

Well, I'll agree are large portion is junk, but stations like the Science channel and the History channel don't suck, and you actually come away knowing more than you did before you watched most of the time.

yea but still, pbs or bbc stuff tends to be superior. history channel or discovery seems to dumb stuff down a little much, or spread material too thin, or repeats footage too much.. like its budget is too low.

One note here..I said the Science channel...not Discovery. Discovery has become crap in the past few years and primarily airs show like Monster House/Garage, Trading Spaces, etc, with very few new science oriented shows any more. The SC has sort of taken over what Discovery used to be. I will agree that they do tend to run shows several times though, but they had two new 2005 shows on the Titan probe mission which were awesome and not even remotely "dumbed down".

As for History, I don't think it really dumbs anything down, but they do run heavy on WW2.

The point I was trying to make is that everyone likes different stuff, and that is how it should be IMO.

:)

Check your facts buddy.
The FCC has never mandated HDTV

Its DTV that is being mandated

I had been shopping for a new TV because lately my current one's picture and sound quality has sucked.

Yesterday I disconnected and reconnected the cable from the box to my TV and suddenly the picture and sound quality are satisfactory.

I can wait for the HD prices to go lower.

I never really could tell the difference between HDTV and regular TV in the stores - then again I never took the time to closely compare them because I didn't want to be assailed by salesmen.

My friend's dad just got a bigscreen HDTV. I was over there a few weeks ago and her Dad and I were watching football on it. He switched it from regular broadcast to HDTV and the difference was like night and day. Maybe it was magnified by it being a big screen, but the regular definition broadcast was blurry and the colors looked muddy. HDTV was bright and crisp - we could see the heat waves from the portable heaters and the scratches on the football players helmets.

Now I want an HDTV - but I owe my parents a whole lotta money for college so I probably won't be buying one very soon

We needed a new tv.. so we got a HDTV. I bought a $20 silver sensor indoor hd antenna and we get all fox, nbc, cbs, pbs, upn and some others in HD. No ABC though.. but everyone I've spoken to can't seem to get it (in florida).

Seriously... You can't see ANY reason that it would be enjoyable to watch DVD's or play games on a RPTV?

you want to see night and day difference, watch hockey in HD... you can see every tiny detail on the ice and even read the lettering on the sticks. INHD channel has college hockey in HD.

I have HDTV.. and love every minute of it..

You get used to the stretched picture for most part, but the HD pictures that I watch everyday is awesome. Watching DVDs on HDTV is also awesome, you might not get the high quality like the HDTV, but you can watch movies in widescreen..

By your same reasoning, you should wait even longer because prices will get cheaper and cheaper.

I got my 57" Toshiba HDTV for free last year. Thank you Howard Stern. :D

my parents bought their hdtv a couple of years ago and so far, we've gotten great use out of it. the hdtv has given our family enough utility over these past couple of years (and surely in the years to come) to make it worth the higher price (although, who's to say the price will drop "considerably" by 2007).

not any that would justify a 1000$ new TV
