Got my HDTV July 2003 with Comcast.

So far, I've recorded almost 720GB of movies, documentaries, T.V. shows all in HDTV (720p/1080i). HDTV box (Motorola 6412) is hooked up via firewaire to the PC. You can't compare the quality of DVD movies to that HDTV movies. Can't wait to watch the Superbowl in HDTV, again.

Morons. :(

I'm a little confused...if he was offering their digital cable service, then you don't need a special TV to take advantage of that...it's just like normal cable except you have a converter box that gives you an an on-screen guide, on demand programming etc.....

No, I understand what you're saying. I didn't want any of the extras being pushed, plus, they try to point out that the picture quality, etc. is far superior. That is where I had my issue.

heh, but depending on their system digital cable "can" be much better quality.

But then again it all depends on how they implemented it.

And I'll have spent those two years (along with the last two) enjoying watching movies and playing video games on a big screen TV.

My RPTV is one of the best purchases I've ever made. :D

Same...I'm in the market for an HDTV tuner (in either PCI or PCI-Express) too.

Actually MOST sets are 1080i native. It's getting a set that does 720p native is the hard thing. Lots more expensive to run high-resolution progressive at this point.

(Owner of Samsung 30" HD set. Since it had a built-in tuner, I pulled in my local stations in all their glory with a cheap Silver Sensor antenna.) And yes, NBC in 1080i rules.

And while you wait until 2007, I'll be sitting here watching my HDTV and laughing at you while you look at a comparatively crappy picture.
There are quite a few HD channels, and my DVD's look better than yours will, too.

There will be a crapload more channels in HD before 2007 ever hits.

I've had the same 32" Hitachi TV for 8 years now. I don't plan on upgrading till this thing dies. By then we will be force fed our TV through intercranial internet connections.

Yeah, we're planning to get the 32" Sanyo, that is sadly... only sold at Wal-Mart, meaning I actually have to shop there! Ugh...

My only beef at the moment is what Time Warner is offering us for HDTV in our area... for free we get KCBS, KNBC, KABC, KTTV (FOX), KCET, TNT, DiscoveryHD, and FSNHD. Now, since I have HBO and Showtime premium channels... I get HBO HDTV and Showtime HDTV for free. Here's the bad part... They want $9.95 a month for ESPNHD, INHD, INHD2, HDNet, and HDNet Movies. The other channels are cool, but all I want from that set is ESPNHD! Damn Time Warner, but at least I get TNT, DiscoveryHD, and FSNHD fore free... the rest I'll be getting from my on-air tuner anyway.

I WISH I could get HDTV here :(

The UK sucks, no one has any HD broadcasting. We have SkyDigital, but there are so many channels the quality on most suck

Sky are brining HD in 2006, but by that time, there will probably be 8x more channels on the system, and the quality of HD will still be terrible

It's really something that depends on the person and situation. To some of you, spending $1500+ on a HDTV is like nothing, but to some of use, spending a $1000 on a TV is a major purchase. This is also a tech savvy group here, so of course most people will have this now instead of waiting. It really boils down to it being simply "worth it" to some people, and not worth it to others.

Just as an example...say you have two high end non HDTV sets and say, DirectTV. Now, if you wanted to go HDTV you would need to first buy a HDTV set, then you need a new HDTV box, then you need a new dish to receive HDTV, then you have to pay to get the new dish installed, then you have to pay more a month for some HDTV channels, and finally, if you have a decent non-progressive scan DVD player, you would need to upgrade that too. For some people, that's a hefty cost for getting into the HDTV scene. Even if you have the money, you might not watch enough TV to justify it.

:)

Well, I wasn't aware such a large HDTV was under $1000. Is this the norm, or was this some sort of hot deal?

Edit:

Just checking Circuit City's site real quick, all of the 30" HDTV's were $850+...you got a 42" for $800?

anything worth watching during prime time is HDTV. if you are complaining about 24/7 broadcasting..whoc ares what daytime broadcasts are showing.. thats cr@p and u shouldn't be watching during the day anyways.

I can't speak for Anubis, but I agree with him for the most part. Some of use rarely watch network TV @ all. The only show I watch regularly on network TV is CSI, and only the original one. I used to love Law and Order, but now that Lenny is gone and replaced with that moron Dennis Farina, and the cute blonde is gone, it seems past it's time now. The rest of the show's you mentioned are pretty much crap...although rarely I'll watch Alias, but it's often pointless if you aren't a regular viewer. As for Conan, I love him, but what's the benefit of Conan in HD?

As for documentaries, I prefer the science channel, and AFAIK, the local PBS carrier up here does not broadcast in HDTV.

See, therein lies the problem...you are looking at the situation from your POV...just because you feel that way doesn't mean it's wrong for someone else to feel differently..

Do you think there will be software hacks around that kind of thing, or will the technology be so low-level or hardware based that it will be hard to get around? Surely if something can be decoded and put on the screen, then it can be captured? Wouldn't some companies refuse to comply, and make cards without the broadcast flag thingy?
