Why are people so quick to buy a HDTV

After reading others posts about suggestions on getting a high definition TV and also see the insain prices of the TVs, i wonder whats the rush.

Lets look at the facts:
1. DVDs are not high definition and HDDVD vs bluelaser discs is still being resolved.
2. The FCC is requiring DTV (high definition TV by 2007). This is very important because high definition will become the standard definition and hence the current high definition TVs will become standard issue (and in some cases have worse resolution). This will force prices down because no more market slogan of HDTV.
3. New technology always costs more at first and falls in price quickly after a year or two.
4. Not every channel is in HDTV.

I dont plan on buying a HDTV until 2007 and by that time i'll spend probably less than half of what people that paid for HDTVs today and get better quaility (all you guys that jumped the gun got 720 resolution when HDTV will be capable of 1080 resolution)

Im not against HDTV but just dont see the benift--ohhh i can see Jay Leno in HD his jokes are so much better now. There my rants over.

EDITED:
I forgot to mention that im one cheap b@stard and main problem is with the money. I dont see anything wrong with buying a HDTV now if you feel the cost is okay i just see the cost more than the reward.

I'm more interested in buying a HDTV capture card for my computer. I believe sometime this year, all capture cards will need to support the Broadcast Flag. If you are watching a show and the it has the broadcast flag turned on, you can't record it. Any HDTV recorders out now don't need to detect the Broadcast Flag. :)

We were in the market for a new set moving into a new house anyway... 57" Sony HDTV for $1800 wasn't bad for Dec. 2002... had a family discount so why not ? We've had HD channels for well over a year too.

As of today:
CBSHD
NBCHD
FOXHD
ABCHD
ESPNHD
PBSHD
STZHD
INHD
FSHD
HBOHD
MAXHD
TMCHD

The only one not included in our package is MAXHD. And yeah... Dolby is just so sweet.

Why not buy one if you have the money, especially considering the pretty decent HDTV prices today. 2007 is only 2 years away. Why invest in a SD TV for only 2 years of use? You make no sense. Plus, many channels are HD now, especially the major networks.

The FCC has been pushing DTV for years now, but its the fact that they've been trying for full-blown HDTV instead of just DTV that's kept it from happening. IIRC, the last deadline was for 2003 or 2004, and I would not be surprised to see it get moved up yet again. Meanwhile, Germany is already exclusively DTV.

And if you wait 3 years for any piece of technology, of course you're going to get more for less money. Wanna cookie? :cookie:

Who's forcing you to buy a HDTV?
If you are a smart shopper you can buy a HDTV capable TV at EDTV prices.

i bought mine because I really wanted to use it w/ a HTPC. I can now listen to all my music, store loads of movies in divx format and play games on a 50" tv. Watching football in HD is amazing.

Every local channel in Atlanta already does digital/HD broadcasts.

Why wait until 2007 when everything I want HD for is already available?

Because watching Sports in HD is FUGGIN awesome?

I'll gladly pay now to watch my Red Sox and Patriots win championships in HD, than wait.

By your same reasoning, you should wait even longer because prices will get cheaper and cheaper.

I paid a little over $800 for a 42" HDTV and I pay an extra $5 a month for 9 HD channels. I don't see how that's not worth it.

I'd never seen actual HDTV telecasts until I visited my friend's home. Saw Starship Troopers and some sports and damn, clearer than with my own eyes :)

Your eyes are clear in the middle but blurry around the edges, while watching tv, the entire tv is in the middle and it's all clear. It's amazing once you see it, because when you're flipping stations, the rest look faded and blurry and even dvds aren't as clear.

I couldn't care less about HD for television

I only really use my 47" Panasonic for watching DVD movies, and it just so happens to be HDTV compatible.

1) DVDs still look much better on an HDTV strictly by eliminating interlacing and displaying progressive scan
2) You're off base, we're already at DTV for many, many channels
3) True, but again HDTVs have been around for close to 10 years and we're seeing them drop
4) No, but most of the good ones are.

Let's face it, NOT buying a HDTV is denying the most satisfying and beautiful viewing experience one can have from DVDs, HD programming, video games and anything else video related.

Also, you may be hit by a bus tomorrow. You should have some finacial planning in life, but if it will make you happy at all just do it. Unless you're working the fry station, it's no big deal. You're talking about saving a few hundred, maybe a thousand bucks for waiting a few years to make yourself happy. Don't always think things out so carefully, most of the time you should treat yourself with your hard earned money, not horde your cash so you can be proud of your purchasing decisions a few theoretical years from now. In fact, if a bananna split sounds good right now, just go eat one, even if you'll weigh six ounces more and it'll be a dollar less tomorrow.

Yeah, your argument is pure crap. 1080i HDTV is practically a standard amongst TVs, except for DLPs... PBS, CBS and others broadcast in full 1080i... have you ever seen an NFL game on CBS in 1080i? It's worth ever dollar! About your argument for new technology, what does that have to do with HDTV? HDTV has been a standard for a long time, it's the different TV technologies you need to be looking at, such as Plasma, Rear-Projection LCD, Rear-Projection DLP, and others. When 2007 rolls around, tons of new types of TV technologies will be introduced into the market such as LCoS and much more.

[Cox Cable Rant]

So, some guy calls me from Cox Cable last evening. He's trying to push their digital cable plan where they are offering it an Showtime for some great price for the next 6 months. I told the guy that I wasn't interested. He asked why. I told him that I didn't have the right equipment to take advantage of their digital cable services. He still questioned why I didn't want their cable plan that they were offering.

Morons. :(
