Why are people sick when they overexert themselves?

I say "people" assuming this does happen to other people right? Seen it in movies anyways 😛

Why does this happen? I felt sick today after running 20km which is the furthest distance ive ever managed to run, i wasent sick but felt pretty bleh... it wasn't immediately after I stopped I would say 30 mins after stopping I felt sick.
 
I don't have an answer sorry, but no it doesn't only happen in movies. A friend of a friend trains MMA, and according to my friend (I don't know the guy) he's told him if he doesn't throw up or at least dry heave he didn't work out hard enough. He has witnesses this guy puking during a work out before. While it's possible as I've seen people on TV (not movies) do it, I'm not exactly sure I possess the drive to work out that hard. And that's probably a good think lol.
 
Not sure what causes it but it's not just in the movies. When I played football it would happen to guys on a fairly regular basis, maybe on every week or 2. The last belt test we had in BJJ a few guys threw up over the course of the test. I would guess it's from pure exhaustion or possibly a sudden dip in blood sugar.

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Backwoods, old-fashioned thinking. Who is he training with - the sensei from the Karate Kid? (The "sweep the leg" guy from Cobra Kai). Unfortunately, I bet that line of thinking is not uncommon among many MMA gyms.

I sure can't explain the science of it, but it does happen to me periodically. After playing center midfield in soccer for two 45 minute halves without subbing, I generally feel physically ill. My muscles literally feel starving for food, but my stomach does not. When I used to run triathlons or when I finished my one and only marathon are two more cases I can think of off hand. Everyone has their "breaking point" I'd say. But to say you should be feeling this way regularly is ludicrous.

We need SC to drop some knowledge on the subject. My guess (using no science whatsoever) is that when you use all the fuel you possibly have, whether it be the glycogen, the carbs, the electrolytes, etc you sort of start cannabalizing yourself for lack of a better word. Your body can't really keep up with the pace or level of exertion.

If you work hard enough, your body actually reduces your immune system's ability to cope with any virus or bacteria that are present. It has to do with inflammatory processes and immune system resources being directed to recovery of muscle, bone, cartilage, and connective tissue rather than fighting abnormal germs within the system. In addition, that can also have to do with generalized soreness. I don't know anybody who feels good when they feel really, really sore.
