Why are office chairs so expensive?!

My gaming chair at home is about shot. After about 1 hour of playing a flight sim my ass/tailbone is shot. The foam in the chair has pretty much flattened out and needs to be replaced...no big deal since it is a $50 target chair.

Started looking online at some choices and holy crap. $180-200 for a freaking chair? All I need is something that rolls, has a cushion that won't degrade, and is able to spin/accommodate my height (6'5").

I don't want to spend $200 on a freaking char, I'd rather it be on something that is fun!

Hell, I paid 800 for mine 13 years ago. And its still in great shape. I guess that's why it was so expensive.

That's not an expensive chair. That's a mid-range Staples/OfficeMax chair. An expensive chair is, say, $500 on up. A really good chair that is comfortable and will last many years and hold up under continuous daily use can easily be hundreds more than that. A Herman Miller can run you $600-800 or more. A Steelcase upwards of $800-1000.

Jeebus...I could get another matching K98 for that price. I can understand a couch/mattress costing that much, but a freaking chair?

I used to always get cheapy $50-100 chairs and the cushion kept going bad or the pleather kept going to shit.

Decided to splurge one day on a $300 chair from Amazon. That was almost 3 years ago and I'm still using it today, perfect condition. You get what you pay for with those things.

I've been looking at the ones on amazon. Which one did you get?

I'm not really all that particular about fabric/type, I'd just like something that is comfortable and won't wear your ass out.

I lied. It was $150.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Bought it in May 2012. Its still awesome now. One minor thing but its more of my fault since I sit shirtless and my room is hot so I sweat often and I think its starting to mess with the backing but I only just noticed it and its tiny. Small wrinkles to the back.

Because they have history, go boom, and I collect them ;).

Chairs can go boom with tannerite, but you really don't collect them.

$1000-1100...The chair better do things to me no other chair has

Well since most people sit in their office chair for over 40 hours a week the good ones are expensive because they are durable, comfortable and will last longer than a year.

1. Usually your company will pay for your chair unless you are a cube-monkey. They write it off

2. If you do pay for your own chair, and $180 is expensive for you, then nobody told you that you don't need an office chair for flipping burgers :p (I kid)

That's ok. just messing with ya. I been using one like these for years: http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/2-pack-windsor-chair/10146218

Hah, I know but I had to give you grief too.

Thing is I use rudder pedals, HOTAS, and track IR and that usually ends up with the chair reclining a tad when I put my feet out and use the rudders.

This is for home :). We have some comfortable office chairs at my work, but they have issues with the hydraulics going out in them.

We have Aerons, Humanscale and the steelcase leap at our work among others.
I loved the Humanscale Freedom a lot so I got that for my home. Got it cheap for about 300 or so.

Well, an office chair might very well be the only piece of furniture that gets as much continuous use as a mattress. And if you don't get laid very much, then it gets more.

Just purchase some foam and fabric online and roll your own seat cushion to save some $.
