Why are mufflers so quiet?

Mufflers are quiet as they reduce noise.
Fart cans are not mufflers.
You have a muffler on your car.
Therefore, your car's sound is reduced by the presence of a muffler.

Let's see. When one is baffled they are usually silent as they attempt to wrap their minds around a confusing problem. But a baffle is also a device used in various ways to block sounds. Are mufflers equipped with actual baffles or do they use some non-baffle method of reducing engine sounds? Is anything that reduces sound considered a baffle or are there certain requirements for that designation? Yet the OP claims that they are indeed baffled, hence their silence. Baffling is not a word that I commonly hear associated with actual mufflers, although it does relate to sound suppression and the sort of confusion that would produce the same effect in a human being. Is this a joke? If so it would gain a great deal of symmetry by clarifying the mechanism by which a muffler reduces sound levels. If it is indeed an actual baffle and not merely functionally similar to a baffle then that would be most humorous indeed.

but it is not always the case. sometimes, particularly if a muffler was altered or punctured or otherwise damaged, it is not necessarily quiet. Infact, in can be quite as loud as aftermarket exhausts which technically might be able to contain a muffler if not straight piped all the way to the cat or the engine

As a motorcycle rider, I completely agree.

I thought Cali already had fairly strict noise laws? It seems like I remember reading on advrider that you had to be careful because even if you're out of state they can give you a fix-it-ticket.
