why are messenger bags considered gay?

Earlier this year, my company gave all of us employees leather messenger bags. Mine is thrown in the back of my car, buried under books, my umbrella, etc. I have no need for it and wouldn't be caught dead using it. I can't find anyone to take it off my hands either. The company logo is on the front or I'd eBay it.

Those Saddleback bags look okay but the handles are overdone. They should just leave the handle off all the small bags. Plus, I hate hate hate metal-on-metal contact on shoulder straps. Bags should be quiet. Only the Saddleback pouch/purse looks fine as-is.

One of the great classic purses. Note the strap and its attachment method. That's the right way to do it. I'm not a huge fan of the bag itself though - with any other kind of clothes, I think the bag would start to look bad.

Looks cool but I'm doubtful of it 'wearing' like a back pack...I have a jack spade bag that has served me well for 6yrs and is still going strong. But when I do put heavier stuff in it, it does wear on me. It's the length of time holding a few kg's of stuff. Messenger bags aren't meant to hold anything remotely heavy at all. Or not even heavy stuff. If it weighs a few kg's with stuff in it for a few minutes it's fine. But you don't want to walk about for a few hrs with it. It just gets really annoying.

I just bought a bag with big straps with good padding. This bag will be a billion times more comfortable to carry stuff to work in!

I've got a Timbuktu messenger bag from a conference I helped organize. It's an awesome quality bag with all the necessary pockets inside, and I use it pretty much everywhere - when I bike around, when I tote around with my two kids, and carry all the kids' necessities. It has an extra belt to keep the bag in place when you are biking, and it looks stylish in dark blue and black.

I only wish it had a dedicated compartment for a laptop, that's all.

You know, the belt is one-click adjustable (on good bags). When you are on a bike, you adjust it lower, when your back arches. When you walk, you cut it higher, so it doesn't bounce of your ass.

I look retarded with my messenger bag if its high. It looks like a purse.

I actually laugh in my head when I see suits with backpacks. Looks totally unprofessional. That is the place for messenger bags (I use one myself).

Backpacks destroy messenger bags in every situation. More comfortable, can carry more such as change of clothes/shower sht/laptop/guns.

If all you're going to carry are papers, then get a briefcase.

The commute to work, it's fine to wear a backpack regardless of what you're wearing. Who cares? Only the same metro's who care about fashion.

A simple Jansport or North Face will do. Once in the office, obviously you're not going to be carrying that around (briefcase if you really need to carry a lot to the meeting). It's the same thing with people in suits wearing casual wear (sneakers) on the subway. Function > Form (more comfortable and cuts down wear on their expensive shoes). Obviously they're not wearing sneaks to their meetings.

Sure, there are a lot of guys in suits or smart casuals carrying backpacks. And they all look totally out of place.

Briefcase? Who does that these days? And even then, the shoulder-strapped ones tend to get bulky and heavy.

There are less-gay options. I have a Glaser Day Bag for example (which I admittedly don't use much) which is kind of a half-briefcase, half-messenger.
